Marathon By Yourself..I mean Sea.
The trip up here has been great, great laughs, some terrible sleeps, and a lot of driving around. Saturday EVERYTHING worked in my favour. Took the tour of the course, and saw all the hills. And there was a lot of em, let me tell you. It was like nothing I had ever seen. The place I stayed at with John was great. There was a fan, went to bed at 9, up at 5. Perfect night sleep.
RACE DAY:
It was around 7 am, and I was standing in the parking lot of the aquatics centre. The strangest feeling came over me, I was about to run a marathon, then with a quick flash back to reality, I was ease. It was wierd. I was calm, comfortable and I just felt like nothing ever before. It was at that moment, that I scraped all race plans, all pace worries, everything. I mumbled to myself, this is it. After deciding to scrap my warm up, I stood around and mingled, talked to Dani, Melissa and Drunko. Then we moved off to the start line. I said goodbye and goodluck to Mel and John, and went up to the front of the line.
3,2,1...Gun goes off. With a mass start of all the runner's in the 5,21, and full it was a fast pace right off the get go. My first k I ran a 2:58. I quickly found my groove, it was smooth. I ran a 4:00 minute pace. I knew that the first half was a lot tougher than the last, so I wanted to blast through it. Hill after hill after hill after hill...They never ended, but my body was just taking it, still pumping out those 4 minute K's. When the marathoners split off and started the out and back part of the course, I knew it was going to be a long long haul to the turnaround. What I didn't expect was to be alone. I ran SOLO, from 8k all the way to 40k. Through the open highway the only company I had was every 3k with the bumbling water station volunteers. At 21k I saw my split and was amazed. 1:25. (PB BABY!) Then back to focus. This race demanded so much focus and strength, that if you left you body for a minute it would eat you up.
40k- With the race just about over, and still in 2nd place, I was passed. Not by a man with more gas, but a man with a better engine. I could force myself down that hill, for fear that I would have fallen face first, and been done. So I took it easy down. Sensing my pain, 3rd place shot out from behind me and ate me up. There was nothing I could have or would have done different at this point. Now sitting in third, and no having no clue where 4th was I pushed on strong, not wanting to lose that spot. Then the next hill, the last. The bridge. The worst hill. I never gave much thought to this one, that was stupid. This hill is what finally drained my legs of everything. My calfs, quads, hams, and TOES started to cramp. Really bad. On the off ramp, about 300m from the finish line I heard Dani, yelling at me, cheering me on. I just buckled down and pushed hard. Then I heard JOHN STANTON announcing to the crowd my name and the fact that I was third place marathon finisher. Final time: 2:57:11. I broke 3!!! And won my age group. 100 bucks at the RR was the prize.
What I think I need to clarify here, is that I ran this race on guts and instinct. I knew in theory that running that fast was going to ruin me in the end, but I also knew that I had nothing to lose, and to just go for it. Throwing away my race plan was the best thing I've ever done. I would not have that well if I did. It was and still is just so surreal. It still hasn't really sunk in yet.
After the race, QMP, Mel, john and I sat in a hot tub and drank booze all night. It was great. Oh which reminds me, Brendan, did you puke in the bathroom downstairs? haha

Amazing, Jacob! Thanks for the awesome report. I've been looking forward to it. You ran strong and hard, and fought through some adversity at the end. And you sub-3'ed it-- I knew you would!
(I will not hesitate to say that you haven't yet reached your full potential. I know you'll be building that running engine in your future training. I so look forward to following your progress.)
I can't imagine what it would be like to run alone for that long in an organized race. In a bigger race you'll probably be able to draw more energy from the crowd.
Again, thanks for giving us a great impression of what it was like to be there. You're AWESOME!

I couldn't agree more! Someday we'll all be able to say we knew Jacob when....
(Gotta ride the coattails, people!)
Big congratulations! You deserve all the kudos, not just because of your running but because of the encouragement you give everyone. It's karma at its best!

If it's any consolation, you can copy the url and see the picture. I love it! Good one!
