Catch The Elves - Pictures now added in last post

Postby bunsontherun » Mon Dec 12, 2005 12:21 pm

On a beautiful and warm Sunday, over 400 runners showed up at Eau Claire Shopping Mall for the Catch the Elves 10 km run in support of Muscular Dystrophy. Among those running were at least three Maniacs - Marvin Martian (Blake); RunGirlRun (Tracie); and Bunsontherun (Ken).
So what is Catch the Elves? Four individuals - dressed up like Elves naturally - get a one minute head start on the rest of the runners. The Elves all carry tickets and each time you catch one you receive a ticket to be used in the draw prizes later. You catch all four Elves, you get four tickets. Everyone is guaranteed at least one ticket as the Elves all have various running abilities. The first Elf pretty well gets mobbed by the group, but that fourth Elf was a pretty fast and elusive one (took me almost three km to catch up to her).
The trail was a standard Bow River Pathway run, with a jaunt through St. Patrick Island where everyone was required to slow down considerably due to a quite extensive patch of snow and ice. Combined with some pandemonium of the issuing of the tickets from the slower Elves, it would be unlikely for anyone to do a PB this day.
The awards ceremony recognized the top three male and female runners -there were no age categories - nor do I expect to see any final results - but I came in fourth overall with a time of 41:23 (remember it was icy).
Tracie and her Shaugnessy running group took a pretty good haul of the draw prizes. Blake and I did not win anything. Next race up - New Years Resolution run 31 Dec 05.

Look like a fun run. They should organize something like this in Ottawa.

We could have Jacob as the superfast elf, Stella as the really-really-fast elf, Bebette as the really-fast elf, and me as the sputtering-geriatric-slower-than-mollasses elf. This would be fun.

I was thinking the same thing!!! It does sound like a really fun run though!

But I'd probably struggle to catch elf number one!

I caught two of the elves and I'm not sure what to do with them next. What do elves eat?

That sounds like a super-fun run!

It actually has me thinking of trying to organize something similar out in this part of the country.

Curious - where is St. Patrick's Island? I'm from Calgary originally, but I'm having a tough time trying to place this. Is it close to Princes' Island?

Finally the net is back up and working!! Talk about panic when I turned on my computer this morning and I couldn't log onto RM!! Okay, I am getting back to normal now. Whew.

Marvin - sorry didn't introduce you to Tracie - I didn't see her until after and I didn't see you later at the draw prizes

Groovy One - St. Patricks Island is right next to St. Georges Island by the zoo. When I look at a map I don't see water separating the two, unless it is some creek or something. Princes Island is closer to Eau Claire.

Mike - Didn't know you had run it too. So you still remain as elusive as the two elves you didn't catch. Let your elves go!! - pretty funny

ET (Enfant Terrible) - I think my 10 km PB is 39:something. Don't have the info here at work.

Cheers to you all and thanks for the comments.

Way to go gents and Tracie!

Blake: Great pic! Of course I like to see Maniac shirts in action, but your race face is what clinches it for me! Good stuff! 8)

Ken: You amaze me every time!

Mike: Be careful. Don't get the elves wet, or feed them after midnight!
