Run4life's boys first trail race w/pics
My sons ran their first ever trail race today. It was put on by Athletes in Kind. I've attached a link to their webpage, what an awesome organization. They raise money to help out families who are battling cancer. They do this through running. Their motto is Kids Helping Kids.
http://athletesinkind.com/aik/
Kids grades K-3 ran 1.5K through Mundy Park and grades 4-7 ran 3.5K.
When we arrived they had some great music playing and we picked up race numbers and chatted with friends. Well I chatted, the boys were running around all over the place.
Here's a prerace photo of the boys
And with Tikey's boys
They had the older kids go off first and then the youngers. The pace bunny for the younger kids was Leah Pells. Very cool.
Oldest ds finished his race in a time of 18:20
Here he is at halfway point
And heading to the finish line
My youngest and Tikey's were neck and neck with 25m to go, here's the proof.
No competition there?? Anyway my youngest must have really wanted to beat his buddy because right after this picture some girl jumped in front of Tikey's son and grabbed him!! It is suspected ( but NOT proven) that run4life son pay have paid her to do that. Advantage run4life son.
Here they are refueling post race
Turns out younger ds was first place boy!!!(I guess it's a good thing he arranged for Tikey son to be "delalyed") 1.5K in 8:23
It was a very well done event. The first place finishers each received a bouquet of flowers and a medal. There were lots of draw prizes, including two $50 gift certificates to the Runners' Den. Food, food and more food. Free coffee for the parents. Very nice.
So proud of both boys. I really can't explain how great it makes me feel to see them active and enjoying it! W00T W00T!
There is another AIK race on July 1st and they will be there.
A very proud running Mama.

That is so cool and they look like they were having so much fun I love watching kids run, they just go for it, no special equipment or running gear, just lots of energy

And 1.5K in 7:23? That is fast!! You sound so proud of both your boys!! (and you should be!)
So, did you have them doing training for this event? I think it is awesome that they are participating in this type of event!
Just noticing my boo-boo now, should be 8:23. That 7:23 would have been some kind of new land speed record for a 7 year old I think.
As for training; my oldest ds runs 5K with me most Saturday mornings. He raced several 5K races with me. They are both involved with the marafun program at their school. The kids run 25 miles in the 6 weeks before the Vancouver International Marathon and then they run their final mile on the actual marathon course on race day. It is an awesome program and one we have been involved with for the past 3 years. The boys think it's great that they receive the bigger, official FULL MARATHON medal and I get the smaller Half Marathon medal. Talk about bragging rights.
It is my hope that running is a part of their lives for the rest of their lives!!

Good on you and the boys!! What an awesome idea!! Must check it out and see if they need volunteers (no youngsters in this household but it's a great cause)

I'm sure volunteers are always needed and appreciated Kristie!! Would love to see you out there. It is a fabulous cause and it is so heartwarming to watch these kids.
