RA's first 5k Chip-Timed Race

Postby RA. » Sun Oct 11, 2009 5:58 pm

Two weeks after the big race, and I wanted to go see my friends run in the valley. Guess what, they have a 5k! So I decided to do it. $30, long sleeved tech shirt, hat, and a guaranteed PB. Can't go wrong.

I just ran it with my watch, by feel, and just wanted to run strong and beat 30 minutes. Still working on that mental game. The first km was fairly quick for me, but easy, then onto a dirt path on the dykes. 2k is feeling a little harder, but it's supposed to, right? No wind, sun is hot, I'm wishing for the wind in my face on the turnaround. 3k is getting harder, but I'm on the back portion of the out-and-back and see Trish is on my heels, so I can't walk even if I wanted to cuz she'd yell at me! This was good practice on my mental. When it hurt, I just thought "slow down a little and think about something else" and it worked. Oh, and that wind I wished for, I got it. And I didn't want it anymore.

4k - tough, belly feels a little funny. Once I hit 4k, I could hear the finish. I did get passed by a few people. Oh well. Up onto the lovely rubbery track for the final sprint and passed 2 people. In under 28:30! Yay! And I am pleased that all my friends racing the Valley Harvest did fabulously!

Splits:
5:20
5:41
5:39
5:59
5:44
Final 28:23 and 13/51 in my age group.

If there was a 10k race that I could get to this fall, I would. It's going to be April before I get the chance.

This makes me smile. And you finished WELL in the top half. Just about in the top quarter! AND it predicts a sub-60 10K. :)
