Doonst has a Pleasant Dundas Valley Saturday, 5 Peaks style

Postby Doonst » Sat Apr 24, 2010 5:08 pm

It was a fine day at the races. The first 5 Peaks (Southern Ontario) race of the season and the first with new race director, our own dgrant. Yes we own him. Beautiful running weather after some threat of rain, sunny for a while, never too hot or too cold. Maniacs in attendance into the double digits, met for the first time Smack and Duffinrunnr. There were just as many maniacs volunteering as running I think, thanks you'all. The race event went well, the only comment other than glowing I have is, I sure missed the music, the rockin' vibe is a big part of a 5 Peaks race. No mo Willie Nelson Dave, just kidding, they had nothing. "Fix it". It was a fun course, faster than average. There were hills throughout but easy footing, ie no rocks. Map. My favorite part was Kms 8,9,10 where we did a loop along the escarpment edge, it felt like a real trail race. Of course number 8 was my slowest, only split over 6 minutes. The first and last were the only ones under 5 minute pace. I had been a little worried about my mushy leg muscles the last 2 days but they just kept going. I took 1:04:07 to do the 12.3 K course, good for 9/24 in my age group and 87/248 overall. 5 Peaks are always a relatively tough crowd; not done for the ego boost or awards. My favorite maniac of all time and Tuzo were out to watch too, fun times all around. I won't get a chance to do too many of this series this year, but I recommend them highly.

This broken wing will fly again
One fine day
This blackbird's mute gonna sing again
One fine day

So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out
Come into the light of one fine day

Awwww Tuzo!! It was great to very briefly see you, Sheldon! Sorry I didn't get to chat more as I was totally slammed giving people shirts and registering. :) Sorry also to any Maniacs who thought I snubbed them... I didn't mean to! My best friend was at the race and I got to say about 3 words to her!! Hope to see you next time.

The music won't be an issue again- there was a generator issue and there will be a back-up generator at all the subsequent races. We actually had a pretty kick-ass playlist made up... stay tuned. :)

I think Dave did a fantastic job for his first race. All the issues were things that are easy to fix for next time. Noone died, got hurt, went thirsty, went hungry, went without a portapotty or went off course.

Nice day for racing indeed. Thanks for coming! The tunes and whole PA system went kaput when we lost a generator, so that was very challenging. Starting a race using a pylon as a megaphone is more old-school than I care to repeat. Don't worry, we've compiled a dope playlist including smooth jazz, inspirational boxing movie montage songs, and death metal. Stay tuned.

Now back to responding to dozenss of emails about a registration database anomaly. Fun!

Nice meeting you out there Doonst - it was perfect weather for a run and the trail was in great shape. Hats off to Dave for working the cone megaphone valiantly - I had a great day and most others I spoke to did as well.
