Dale's WPS Half Mary Report
Got up at 6:00. Quick shower, breakfast, and weather forecast check. Decided that shorts and a long-sleeved tech shirt were in order. I'm much happier if I'm shivering before the race starts than sweating profusely during it.
Got to the start area around 7:30, and ran into Kristen right before the starting gun. This was my first time ever in the front corral, it felt weird to be with the "fast" runners. When the race started, Kristen galloped off towards the horizon leaving me huffing and puffing my way through Assiniboine park. After about 2 corners, I glanced left and saw Darth Tater huffing and puffing along beside me. He graciously offered his services in pacing me towards a 1:45 finish, and I graciously accepted. Fortunately, there was very little finger pulling. The conversation mostly revolved around the merits and detriments of bagpipe music.
Around 6 miles into the race, Tater told me to go on as he wasn't feeling too good. So on I went by myself. At one point, there was a rather large puddle covering most of the road. Almost everybody was dodging left or right onto lawns. I however, correctly realized this would add extra distance onto my run. Instead I got a good running start and leaped over the perilous moat much to the joy of the spectators who let our a cheer of approval. After the relay exchange, a not unattractive woman ended up running ahead of me around the same pace as me. With her red thong sticking out of her shorts, I decided that if I was going to use somebody to pace me and stare at their butt the rest of the race, it may as well have a red thong.
By mile 10, I had lost red thong girl. I did a quick assessment of how much energy I had left in the tank, and figured I could push my pace into the red zone. Basically, I treated the last 5k of the race as if it was a 5k race. With 1 mile left in the race, I cut loose and let my legs fly. To the uneducated bystander, I looked like I was on my way to winning Olympic gold. According to my Nike+, that was the fastest mile I ever ran. I crossed the finish line in 1:43:43 and immediately curled into the fetal position ready to start dry heaving.
Fortunately, the heaves never came.

Way to go Dale. Looks like those few Roadkill workouts have paid off for you. Congrats on a fantastic time on a **** weather day.

You know... I actually enjoyed the weather. It wasn't too hot, which is perfect for me since I sweat like a pig on a spit. And fortunately it didn't rain while I was racing, only after I had finished.

Congratulations Dale on an excellent race. It appears that you set yourself up nicely throughout aside from the fixation on a red thong. Good thing that it did not mesmerize you into some strange trance. Way to hit the PB. Rest well and prepare for the next challenge.

No, she actually slowed down. I wasn't ready to slow down with her. I had bigger fish to catch.

Congratulations Dale. I loved the report and could relate to a few motivators you mentioned.
I agree with Suess in looking for more discussion on piping.
Wickedly good run Dale. I'm betting your pacing improvements are going to lead you towards other worthy PB's. Terrific!
