LisaBs First Marathon
LisaBs First Marathon
Yayyy I ran a Marathon!!!!! I'm still on a high! What a feeling of accomplishment
I went into the race hoping to do 4:30 but thinking that was a best case scenario and if I finished I would be happy... it was my first and any finish is a PB, right??
Started off in front of the 4:00 bunny (oops) but I just got to the start line as the gun went off so just slipped in and didn't seed myself correct. fyi - people take too long in portapotties prior to a race! and it ticks me off that there were spectators in line
Oh well... off we went...
Saw Dwayne just as we started (so nice to see a familiar face) My hubby was getting my son ready for the SuperRun so no where near.
On Pembina I caught up with Habs and we ran for awhile together - around 5km or so. Nice to chat with her as I didn't get a chance at BP the night before. After a bit she pulled ahead - and well I shouldn't have been at that pace given the distance I had to cover yet! Andy whizzed past me shortly after that - Go Andy!!
Cruised along enjoying the cheering fans - what a great thing that people come and cheer everyone. It amazes me.
I learnt from the Half last year that I needed to hydrate better. So at each station I took a cup of water and gatorade.
At about 12km I had to stop at a portapottie. and had to wait *sigh* but had passed the prior one that had a couple people waiting so this was better.
My parents had said they'd be around Polo Park to catch me so that was a motivation to get to that half way point. I was happily surprised though to see Kristen after the Park foot bridge cheering It was so great to see her! and she had a baggie of ice for me!!!! Wow did that help down Portage Ave!!!! Thank you Kristen!
I got to Polo Park at the two hour mark and had told my parents I'd be there at 2 - 2:30. They weren't there. I was a bit sad but kept going, figured they were perhaps late. It was nice to get into the shade off of Portage but then the mosquitos would keep biting!! I had forgotten bug spray - although I would have sweated it off by then! lol
On Broadway I saw my parents!! I had to fight not to cry!!! My Mom tells me she bawled seeing me! lol
At this point I slowed down quite a bit but kept trudging on. I was so happy to see the HUGE chalked " Go Dale and LisaB" on Lyndale Drive!!! I knew a Maniac had done it but was unsure who! But I see NFL posted that it was her doing! So Awesome!!! Thank you!
I saw Kristen again... I think at the Dunkirk turn? St. Mary's Road?? She ran a bit with me which was so appreciated!! And kept me going
Saw Dwayne again at the water station and got some more cheers!
At this point I remembered running the Half again and thought.... I feel better at this point running a Full then I did at the Half! Which was a charge to spur me on. I also put on my headset for a bit to keep the feet moving.
When I was going over Bishop Grandin I looked at my Garmin and thought... I could do 4:30!!! Just keep running!!
That last stretch seems like forever - you're right KBO - I think Irv's Mile is more than a mile long!!!
Coming into the stadium is such a rush!!! Hearing your name announced Crossing the finish line is bliss
I did it!!!
Mouse gave me a big smoosh and my medal
And Andy was such a doll providing a well needed chair, some shade and fluids and great conversation
My final time was 4:25.52

Re: LisaBs First Marathon
I love reading about "First Marathons"...Your report brought back so many memories of my first marathon (MB in 2006) I had a few tears in my eyes as I was reading it.
It was muggy and the mosquitoes were horrendous around the Wolsely area when I ran it too (probably something to do with all the sweaty bodies running by! )
The Bishop Grandin overpass which seemed like an endless hill followed by Irv's "longer than a mile" mile. Great that you had so many people on the course to encourage you. Glad you saw the chalked sign. I knew I couldn't be there, but had to do something to let you know I was thinking of you.
Congratulations Lisa! You are a marathoner!!!!!!!

Congratulations, again, Lisa ... You are a MARATHONER !!!
As I commenbted yesterday, as you finished ... that, you looked way to happy and relaxed crossing the finish line ... for a person who had just finished a marathon ...
It was great chatting with you and your dh in the infield afterwards ...

Congrats MARATHONER! Savour the feeling of accomplishment you feel today. And happy first marathon!!!
We train more joyfully and productively when we focus on the now, rather than on our future race day performance. It's a long road from here to there with many miles to go. We need to run each one. Accept where you are today and simply be thankful for the work you've accomplished. KA

I thought the exact same thing when I saw you at Mile 22. You seemed much happier and energetic than the other runners, relay runners included! Guess that just means you'll need to do a few more of these. Got the next one planned yet?
Congrats once again, Marathoner! You did it!
PS So cool that you saw NFL's chalk message!

It was great running with you for those k's. You looked very strong (but that was in the first 5k)
I agree with you about Irv's mile-it is L-O-N-G....
In the paper today they said it went to "white" for a while, then back down to "red", so you must have managed the heat very well.
Congratulations on a great first marathon.

Re: LisaBs First Marathon
I'm sure Irv was a nice guy but I can't stand that stupid extra long mile.
Good job on your first, and probably not last, marathon. What an impressive debut!

During the second half more than once KBO's words of advice came to mind....
"Just don't stop!"
Wise words! It was enough to get me running again after a water break.
Thank you everyone for your Congrats

Great detailed report. You had the biggest smile on your face when I gave you your medal. You are truly an amazing talented marathoner. Congrats. To pull that time off in the heat and humidity is a remarkable feat. Great job, way to give er...
