HCmD's Bushtukah Canada Day 5K Celebration
HCmD's Bushtukah Canada Day 5K Celebration
Had a surprisingly, but pleasant, solid 5K effort in this morning's Bushtakuh Canada Day 5K Race, finishing it in 20:10 , by far my best time in 6 years, and since my issues with my achilles in 2005 ... My initial goal was to run a sub 21 minutes, improving on my Ottawa Race Weekend performance, so am quite happy with this ... Upon reflection, I lost a bit of focus in mile 2, where my pace went into one of my happy efforts, and had I realized how close I was to a sub 20 minute, I could have pushed on a bit harder . Ahhhh, hindsight is 20:20, eh!!!
Was nice to meet up with some Maniacs before and after the races .... Claudie, Neil, Sherry, Ken, Cynthia, and, .. my training partner, Beth, finished up with 24:16 ...
Afterwards, I went for a 10k / 59 minute steady recovery run, in the 'hoods of Kanata ... Basically, turned out to be a 1KM self-induced penalty for every second over 20 minutes ...

Re: HCmD's Bushtukah Canada Day 5K Celebration
So, kinda interesting looking at my split times, where my opening and final 1K split were sub 4 minutes and my mid-2-3Kms were in that dead zone where I just lost a bit of focus and ran at a relatively comfortable pace without a sense of urgency .... Any ideas of how one can train one's "Mental" to "Racing" vs "Running" in a race, as I have been tending to hold back in the middle 1/3 in races to save energy for that last kick, with lots to spare, apparently ?

That's an 11 second spread, that's not really too bad Alfie. Don't feel the need to second guess a plan that worked, you did way better than you hoped and your splits are just fine.
