mas_runner Canada Day Run 5km - Ottawa

This will be a short report as I rather stupidly left my Garmin on my desk at work so I had to pace myself by km markers and the chrono on my watch. I was dying to go under 25 minutes officially as a 5km PB as I had managed 24:53 in the first half of a 10km race a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately I got a chesty cough and figured that I might not be able to go at full effort.

Ran a little test 5km yesterday to see if I could manage some hills without wheezing too much, wasn't too bad so I figured I would run it and just enjoy the run if I couldn't push as hard as I wanted to.

Race plan was to take it easy in the 1st km as it was steadily uphill, gun it down the hill that encompassed the 2nd km, get into a nice steady pace for kms 3 and 4 and then gun it with what I had left for km 5.

Pleased to say I executed my plan to near perfection and despite windy conditions and me coughing a lot after uphills, I ran a PB of 23:41!!!

Really pleased with that, as I mentioned in another thread, I have broken down the psychological barrier of running kms under 5 minutes (all 5 were under 5 mins/km today).

I wonder what I could run it in when my chest has cleared???

No, I pretty much knew my splits yesterday so it would have been just the same. It's just as I have been improving, seeing 4:XX as a split was such a rare thing that I always figured it was some anomoly, a downhill or a tailwind, but now I am seeing it more often I feel I can run at the speed in a race and not feel out of my depth, I recall it was the same with breaking 6 mins/km, once you break through and believe in yourself it changes your mindset.

I would like to give a big thank you to all those on this fine web forum that have helped me and given me valuable advice. I have improved my running so much over the last 6 months and a lot of that is down to you fine folks.
