1st annual Dwarf solo 10k

Postby Joe Dwarf » Sun Jul 11, 2010 4:28 pm

So my training plan called for a 10k race this weekend or next, but there is none to be had in this region so I decided to do a self-timed event. I prepared very heavily for this by attending my company's golf tournament yesterday and having a half-dozen drinks, then getting to bed about 1:30. So mildly hungover and starting around 10:30 when it was already getting a little hot was probably not the best idea.

Anyways, I was using my old flaky Garmin e-trex to get a handle on pacing which was roughly as follows (remember, not strictly accurate): 4:05, 4:03, 4:35, 4:44, 4:24, 4:46, 4:48, 4:56, 5:00, 4:36

So my legs were feeling pretty heavy near the end due to the heat and me going out ridiculously fast in the first 2 k. I think if I was better prepared and paced smarter I could be faster.

Overall, 46:34 which is over 2 minutes faster than the only 10k I've ever officially raced 5 years ago. I'll call that an unofficial PB and feed that into my training paces as I get ready for my first HM coming up on August 15th. I'm pretty happy with that considering that in March I was so out of running shape that I had to walk halfway through a 5 k easy run. This training plan I'm on seems to be working well.

Joe, I do personal multi-days because I know I don't have time or resources to travel to an official multi-day. So, it is wonderful that you think it ok to stage your own solo race when you can't get to an official one. Your reasons for doing it are great.

Due to winning the overall, I had to forfeit the AG. Rules are rules.

Congrats on a great time while running hungover. Must have made you more relaxed, and took the pressure off......

Some running careers are rumored to have started with a hangover

You got the training and fitness measurement you needed and are well on your way to some low-40-type times later in the year.
