The streak that was almost broken - Ironboy's Army Run.

Postby Ironboy » Sun Sep 19, 2010 1:24 pm

Saturday night as I lay in bed I was depressed. There was no way I was going to be able to race the next morning.

I went to the friendship run with irondaughter and did the 3km (more like 2.5 for us) and ran into cannalrunner. He asked me how I was and I told him, I thought I'd do some foam roller that day, because my quads and ankles felt sore. We joked about phantom pains of taper, but then it dawned on me, I hadn't really tapered at all, this wasn't really a race for me, so I maintained my regular training schedule.

I went to pick up Scotty's race kit and shop for a skirt for Irondaughter at the expo, when all of a sudden I started feeling very unwell. The pain in my joints worsened, I felt nauseous and weak. Great! I thought, a flu the day before my third Army run! What luck!

I really like having a streak, I am the only 1:50 continuous bunny the Army run has ever had. Ever. How cool is that? After my streak at Around the Bay was broken when Irontoddler was a baby, I so wanted something to fill the void and the Army run pace bunny gig was it. And then it looked like it was all over.

There was no way I could race the way I was feeling. Scotty and CAW must have thought I was the worst host ever at supper on Saturday night. I just wanted to curl up in a ball and die.

I lay in bed depressed, but hopeful. I had no other symptoms, maybe it was something I ate. I woke up in cold sweats at one point in the night but I felt better, like the worst was over, and sure enough by morning I felt good as new.

We left irontoddler in the capable hands of CAW with Irondaughter as a resource and went to the corrals after a short trip to the port-a-potty.

The cannon when off and away we went, the first km was slow with congrestion, I lost 30 seconds and told everyone not to worry, we'd make it up before the end. Well call me a liar, every bloody split I took from that point on was almost exactly 30 seconds off pace!

At least I was consistent! ;)

The last 4km were really tough. Owing from whatever had affected me the day before I guess. But I managed to hold on to the end and came in at 1:50:28!

Saw quite a few maniacs today including HmCD, Marg and a surprise appearence by Q and lonerunner (yay!), a quick hello from orleansrunner on the way to the corrals, and ran into SteveF and JLA in the finish area. And of course Scotty and CAW (thanks a million).

ETA: Saw TriChristine in the finishing shoot and met Mr. and Mrs. Strider by the Starbucks!

Irondaughter did a fabulous job looking after irontoddler with CAW, they both deserve medals!

And on a final note I want to congratulate Irongirl on a fantastic race. You rock babe. I love you.

Cheers.

Thanks James for pacing my older brother to his first half marathon. He rocked it at 1:48:08!
next up:

This broken wing will fly again
One fine day
This blackbird's mute gonna sing again
One fine day

So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out
Come into the light of one fine day

Glad you're feeling better and congrats on keeping the streak going. I thought I might be running with you a bit today but it didn't happen in the end.

That is a tough first kilometer. The left turn, right turn, right turn makes it tough for the pace groups. Personally I like this course better than the old one. Hope they keep it. Hope I didn't pass you a bug. I am feeling like I have the flu (not good since I am pacing Scotia next weekend). Great you kept your streak going...and don't worry--I have you pencilled in for next year.
