WPS Half - DNF :(
Well, to get it out of the way, I called it a day at the half way point. My Garmin had hit 10.76 km, and I stopped just about at the relay exchange point. I forgot to hit stop for a while, I think it was about 1:20 at that point.
I went into this undertrained, and with a strain in my peroneal tendon. Not the one I injured in February, the *other* one. Since it was my first half marathon, I was determined to try. It hasn't been hurting for the last few days, and I'd been ok'd to run with it taped by an AT. The weather sucked, but once we got moving, it really wasn't bad. I felt worse for the course marshalls having to stand at the corners, whereas we got to keep moving at least!
I was on Wellington Cres. when I heard a runner yell "deer"! Next thing you know, there's a deer charging down the street, weaving and dodging - it was obviously spooked & unsure what to do. All I could think was which way should I dodge, cause it froze about 10 feet in front of me. I went left and the deer went right, and hit a woman running shortly behind me. I'm really glad she got up okay, because she went down hard & hit the curb. The deer went down as well, and scrambled off towards the river - I couldn't tell if it was limping or not.
After the deer, we spotted 3 more following. Luckily they cleared the crowd okay. 2 lovely women asked if I wanted to join them at that point, they were doing 10 & 1 and aiming around 3 hours. I figured 3 hours sounded good and hung out with them. My foot started giving me grief at about mile 3, but I decided to stick it out to the relay station near the footbridge back to Assiniboine Park.
Had it not been for my foot, I think I would have made it. I felt great, and my breathing was under control more than it's been in any other race, even with the cold. I owe the 2 women I was with a huge thank you, as I think it was their help pacing that really helped with that. Turns out they run in my area on a regular basis, so I may join them for some training runs.
Huge thanks to all the volunteers that made it out, and congrats to all the runners. Thanks for the boost from DaddyRunner here who spotted me right at the start line...even my family couldn't see me crossing the line, so someone seeing me & calling out was awesome! And the course official at the end...when I notified her I'd dropped out, she told me "that sucks sweetie" and handed me a finisher's backpack as well.
I'll be back next year, and finishing it.

Re: WPS Half - DNF :(
Sorry to hear about your race not going according to plan.
DNF do suck, but it is much better to know when to call it a day than hurt yourself more.
At least you get to brag that you ran in that stupid weather - my DH thought I was nuts to race today.

Re: WPS Half - DNF :(
You lined up and gave it a try. I read about the deer at the Free Press website. Pretty wild that you were right there when it happened! That will be a great story you can tell for the rest of your life.
Sucks you had to pull out, but you'll get it done another day!

At least you tried and were smart enough to pull the plug! Hope your foot continues to heal so you can get out there again soon. Sorry I didn't see you at the race. With all the winter gear it was tough to know who people were!

Gotta know when to hold'm and know when to walk away, and to run and race another decision ... You are a very wise and smart person ... deciding to choose your health, for the long run ...

Sounds like you made the right call to DNF - there will always be another half out there for you, and getting healthy is a higher priority. And about the deer. I'm so glad to hear that the runner (and presumably the deer, too) is ok!

Maybe in a trail race, but in one of the poshest neighbourhoods of Winnipeg? It's not like they're on the outskirts of the city either!

Sorry to hear you couldn't finish. I think you made the right call. Take a rest and take it nice and slowly for a while, you'll get there and it will be all the sweeter, just ask R4L.

Sounds like you made a good call (what a nasty day) - hope your recovery goes well; take care!
We train more joyfully and productively when we focus on the now, rather than on our future race day performance. It's a long road from here to there with many miles to go. We need to run each one. Accept where you are today and simply be thankful for the work you've accomplished. KA

Sorry about the DNF but good to know when to call it quits.

re: the deer- only in Canada!!!
Hey, I can understand why you wanted to try, and it was smart to pull out when you did rather than limp it in and be injured for longer. Rehab it up, and I can't wait to hear how you do in the summer. You made a good choice- a tough one but the best runners out there would've done the same thing.

Re: WPS Half - DNF :(
Have to agree with everyone else - deer story is great, DNF is disappointing for you but a wise decision! Totally respect you for putting yourself before the bling of finishing. I have a friend who won't do that. One injury has led to another and what should have healed long ago has now forced her to drop out of ORW Half marathon. She is griping constantly about her injury that won't heal and racing 5K's every few weeks. Result ... no healing happening! The DNF may not have been your hope for the day but good health and strong races are in your future where the only deer is you running like a deer from start to finish (without plowing other runners over that is!)

Oh my, and I thought potholes in the road were bad.....that's crazy!
Sorry for the DNF though. Hope your foot feels better soon, and there's lots of spring/summer/fall racing left, so you definitely made the right decision.

Hey, this is Winnipeg in the spring...here we get deer AND potholes!
