Silverton Running Adventure

Postby Spirit Unleashed » Wed Aug 24, 2011 11:08 am

The story begins.

Spirit to RM planet:

Hi Maniacs, those of you who follow my journal know I am going on a Colorado Running Vacation, otherwise know as the Silverton 1000. I decided to start the race report here and now, so details leading up to the event as well as results are all in one place. This is sort of like a blog. Hope this is ok with you guys.

Here is a picture of part of the trail:

Image

If nothing else, it is a beautiful place to spend 72 hours running (or walking as I expect I'll be doing a lot of). To be honest, covering 100 miles is a big challenge for me. I don't think I have the mental determination to keep going when my feet hurt. But mental and spiritual challenges are what ultra running is about for me.

I just took 2 days off running and this morning, only did a 3 mile speedy run. I also started my packing list (crimony, I want to bring a ton of stuff). I need to get serious about packing.

Spirit out

Thanks Andy, I suspect I won't be fussing with the computer very much and sending pictures to photobucket takes time. But any pictures I take will be with the bb; easy to send to you.

Best wishes to you!

I checked the website, but couldn't see if there was a way to track you? Do you know?

Enjoy your vacation!

They will come by e-mail, not bb messenger. So, I can send to you. I think your e-mail is on my bb. But, Andy will post pictures (since I don't think you do that too much).

This evening, I imagined myself running through these silent and solid mountains. I wondered what I would contemplate, or feel in the depths of my heart. Are they the presence of eternal peace, quietly surrounding and embracing? Will I hear the wind and that sort of mountainous echo; not heard in the humid flats of Missouri? A few of the other runners are from Hawaii. And what sort of little conversations and jokes will develop among us?

If I want to do the math and worry about winning, I can check out the other entrants and see if I am faster or better here:

Tonight, I got out my old duffle bag to see if the new folding chair would fit in it (long). It does, but just barely. I might try to find a shorter one tomorrow night. Dicks had a huge selection but more expensive.

Then, I looked around United airlines to see if they had a package deal where you pay more to by-pass lines, but also your bags get checked as part of the package. No such luck. So $50 for 2 bags.

Then today, I took a new pair of shoes out of the box and wore to work; beginning breaking in. I'm going to take a pair of Nimbus 12s with 80 miles but feel perfect, a brand new pair of Nimbus 12s and the Nokas for walking.

And, I bought a few small items at the store for the trip.

I was in a seminar at work today. At lunch, they started in on making comments about runners and the insanity of running at all or more than 5k, let alone 30 miles a day... yadda yadda. Part of the problem is I was eating a salad and they had sandwiches/chips/cookies. Obviously, I was not going along with the program.

Did they say this knowing what you're about to do? Or just making the comment in general?

Friday September 2
Scattered thunderstorms. Highs in the mid 60s and lows in the upper 30s.

Saturday September 3
Partly cloudy. Highs in the mid 60s and lows in the upper 30s.

Sunday September 4
Plenty of sun. Highs in the mid 60s and lows in the upper 30s.

Monday September 5
Mix of sun and clouds. Highs in the mid 60s and lows in the upper 30s.

ok, so shoes and socks are decided. I'm taking a HUGE pile of socks. Rain gear and some warm stuff will come. Tonight, I need to start packaging my nutrition. 5 days, Thursday, I'll be in my hotel in Silverton with my packet and chip. I hope I am eating a salad too! I am excited about the Hokas. They are so comfortable to walk in. They could really be the key to making 100 miles or not. I am excited about the new fuel belt. You wouldn't think I'd need a fuel belt if I pass the main aid station every mile. but I'm concerned about wasting time cuz I stopped too much. If I carry a little drink and fuel, I won't have to stop as much and I can have it on a time schedule.
