RA and the Battle of the Hills (CTRR LEG 7) - photo added

Postby RA. » Sun May 27, 2012 6:34 pm

Sixth time lucky to hit the mats at CTRR? Nope. But darn close again.

Image

I knew that the first 5-8k was uphill, gaining 100m elevation, so thought I'd start slow, ideally about 6:30/km as I knew I could make it up on the downs. I had no idea what I was in for. By 3k, I gave up on the idea of hitting the mats as my hamstrings were already dying. I took a walk break at 2k, then thought "I'll just take one every 2k up the hill" and then that didn't work - took a few more.

I'd pass runners, saying "I think we deserve a downhill soon," and then it came!!! I LOVED the downhill. I just flew. I looked at my garmin many times and saw it flashing a 4:40 pace down those hills on the fun parts. I knew it would come back to get me, but I couldn't slow down. I knew I still had a chance to hit the mats. I had no idea that it would basically be 5k up hill, then 5k down hill.

After 10k, it got HARD. The little ups started again, then more down. The quads were beat. Luckily, at 10k, my support crew were there to give me some water and give me an excuse to walk. I took a few walks when I needed them, knowing I still had to finish on an uphill.

At around 13k, I got to the washed out bridge and knew I just had to turn the corner and run up the hill. Another runner and I kept passing each other and were pretty much together from 10k on. I took a little walk, and she passed and tapped my back and yelled "Come on!" I said "I am. But I need to catch my breath for that last up hill!" I then started running and she walked. I said "Now YOU come on!" and she did. She was on my heels and just as we got to the old finish (400m to go) the next leg of the race started. "Damn," I heard her say.

I ran. I heard COTR (who was road crew) yell SO loudly "COME ON, ANG! RUN!" And I did. The mats were already folded up. But, I at least SAW them. I got an official time. I got my hug from COTR before she had to leave for the next leg. I did all I could do that race.

I came in 48th out of 70. That's a good placement for me! The official results say I ran 1:20:03 for 13.5k for a pace of 5:56.

It's done. I'm content, but still have to go back to get across the mats another year, before they are pulled up.

Garmin Splits:

1-6:00
2-6:26
3-6:10
4-6:51
5-6:31 (31:58 5k)
6-5:32
7-5:03
8-5:40
9-5:02
10-5:23 (58:38 10k - 7 seconds off my 10k PB, making the second 5k a new unofficial PB of 26:40!)
11-6:43
12-6:28
13-5:59
0.37k in 2:12

Total = 13.37 in 1:20 = 5:59 pace

Here's my race photo. I don't remember where he was - near the start? Near the finish? I know I was trying to smile for the camera, but I should have not!

It was a really fun weekend overall. Our team placed higher than we ever had before (at least when I was on the team!) and we had a few really fast runners. We didn't get any penalties, and we all had a lot of fun.

I saw a moose, a deer, and lots of crazy runners. Sadly, I just heard that a runner died there on the last leg today. Very sad.

They take the mats away when 22 Teams are still out there ?? :what: That's just mean ..

One day, I keep telling myself, I would like to take part in one of these CTTR Relays, in combination of running the Bluenose Marathon, the previous weekend ... and, just make it a mini vacation to Halifax ... :shifty:

Congrats, still on a solid effort on that Leg, Ang ... :P

They have to move the mats to the end of the next leg. You get 9:30 miles, and then they are gone. Depending on tear down, sometimes you get a bit more/less.

Do they only have one set of timing mats? What if a team reaches before the mat is there? Or does each leg have a set starting time and times are just added up at the end?

Hi J. It is really 17 races. Every team's runners start at the same time for each leg.

ETA Here are the leg descriptions with the start times and the elevations. http://cabottrailrelay.com/wp-content/u ... s-2012.pdf

I don't think it's ever been an issue that someone gets there before the timing crew. This was the 25th running of the relay, and they have it down pretty well. That's why they have to pull them up so quick and get to the end of the next leg.

No. So far, I've run 1,3,7,8,15, & 16. I won't start repeating yet, but I'm done most of the "easy" ones. So, the difficulty is going up, or I'm going to have to start running night legs.

I just edited to reflect that the timing people adjusted to the correct length. Now my pace is accurate at 5:56!

I was picturing it as being more of an actual relay where the next runner starts when the their team member finishes the previous leg. But I see that they don't do it that way. That would make it logistically more difficult to manage all the exchanges.

Anyway- glad they fixes the official distance and your time. :)

Nice run, Ang!! Maybe if they hadn't changed the course, you would have made the mats. But at least you got to the finish when they were still there and got an "official" time...that counts for me.

That leg was definitely not easy, but was rated 3/5 for difficulty.

Nick, I was past the old finish when the next leg started. So close.

And, I posted my run report on my blog and a girl I follow on twitter tweeted that it was her mom that was the runner I was chatting to in the last bit! So I asked her to pass along my thanks for the company!

Great report RA, certainly looked like a tough section to race. Way to run a rather evenly split race in the end, but that is one amazing negative split for the first 10K of the race between the 1st 5k and the last. Granted that negative split was hill assisted, it is still amazing nonetheless!
PB’s (official race results)
5K – 26:20; 8K – 41:28; 10K – 52:13; 15K - 1:22:43; 21.1K – 1:54:16; 30K – 2:51:34; 42.2K – 4:24:14

What is up for 2018

TBA
Planning & in my sights
Jun 9th - Puddle Jumper Classic
