once again Doonst pins on a bib

Postby Doonst » Sat Jun 23, 2012 2:10 pm

Its been over 8 months! Since I actually did a race, running that is. Not for lack of trying; there were 3 official dns's and another couple I hoped to sign up for and missed. Nothing huge, bad back one race, bad cold the next 2. I did do a 35 K mountain bike race in April though.
So I was a little leery. I didn't sign up in advance even though it would have saved me over 10 bucks to do so just 2 days ago.
Anyways I showed up at Mounstberg Conservation Area, about a half hour away, for the lowest- key race I could think of. Listed as a 5.6 K trail race, no PB pressure or likely difficult terrain. Put on by VRPro, it was called the Meredith Hagan Inspiration Run. She was a local triathlete and part of Phat Chicks who trained women in triathlons stuff, and died cycling. There was also a 10 K.
So there I am at a start line with a bib on! Civilized 10 o'clock start. Just over 200 in the 5.6, its a little crowded for a minute or two. I haven't been running too terrible fast or far for a while so I didn't press all that hard. Still I pass people and settle in amongst my current peers. First two Kms took 4:49 each. Then we hit a hill that seemed to just go on, corner after corner. That one was 5:51. A couple of people passed me, including what turned out to be the first place woman. I got the guy back shortly after, and he stayed on my heels until the end where he passed. It was pretty hot in the sun, only about half the course was shaded. Still better than the last few days of 34 degrees, only 27 today. Other than the third Km with its hills and roots, the rest of the trails were more like grassy tractor paths. Pick it up maybe a bit at the end; last .6 is at 4:30 pace. Hey, its trails. Final is 27:51, just sub 5 pace. 10th overall out of 202, 2nd place age group. I talked to the guy who took my age group, also a recovering injury guy who has done the Ouser ultras. The winner was a Kenyan who won by over 6 minutes, 19 minutes to 25 for second place.
It could have been worse, didn't hurt a bit. It was actually fun, maybe I'll do another someday.
next up:

This broken wing will fly again
One fine day
This blackbird's mute gonna sing again
One fine day

So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out
Come into the light of one fine day

Too bad about the AG medal as now you have no hope of escaping the racing itch.

How fancy!!! An age-group placement on your first run back! Way to go, Doonst! I am happy you are back at it.
Lightning :)

We're going to try this new thing called jogging. Or maybe it's yogging-with a silent "j". Apparently you just run for an extended period of time. It's supposed to be wild.
