This is always a tough race, the only quick kilometres here come early and you need to make a call on what you think you have at that time. Previous results:

Splits By Year:
2009 - 51:52 / 53:16 (26:36/26:40) / 57:03 = 2:42:11.6
2010 - 49:26 / 50:07 (25:32/24:35) / 50:36 = 2:30:09.2
2012 - 48:10 / 49:09 (24:29/24:39) / 49:56 = 2:27:14.7

I thought 2:25:00 was an appropriate stretch goal so I needed, considering the wicked back half, to go out in 4:46 to 4:48/K to enable 4:50/K for the race should that be there. I knew 2:26:00 was more realistic (and still tough) but I wanted to test myself fully so I know what I have going for a Marathon PB May 5. Not sure what this would look like, I had not run a 10K or Half Marathon yet this year so no lengthy speed work in race conditions.

I got myself into Corral B, the new corral system worked great. I saw Jonovision Man and several local friends from the Uxbridge Running Club as well.

And we were off:

1K - 10K Splits
4:49, 4:46, 4:42, 4:46, 4:50, 4:47, 4:45, 4:47, 4:50, 4:44, (0:00.3)
47.45.7 for first 10K

Felt easy as usual through 10K.

11K to 15K Splits
4:55, 4:47, 4:46, 4:46, 4:42, 0:03.5
23:59.5 for 5K
1:11:45.2 thru 15K

Same through 15K. Things got tougher at 18K as usual.

16K to 20K Splits
4:45, 4:48, 4:55, 4:57, 5:00, 0:01.2
24:26.2 for 5K
1:36:11.4 thru 20K

Come 21K-28K, I was having to slow myself down to 5:00/K+ to hold myself together for the remainder of the race versus the 4:55-5:00/K hoped. Those hills suck - and I had spent more than I had thought early maintaining a quick pace.

21K to 30K Splits
5:10, 5:15, 5:03, 5:04, 4:54, 5:13, 5:12, 5:12, 4:55, 4:51.1
50:49.1 for last 10K

Image

2:27:00.5 Chip time
2:27:49.8 Gun Time, 134/548 M40-44, 967/6848 overall

I was fortunate to hang on for a PB, it went from a sure thing to doubtful over the last 10K. My quickest pace ever for the 1-10K, 11-15K and 16-20K sections and then I was about a minute off where I could have been 21-30k had I gone out more conservatively. But that is OK, the horror stories out there see runners slide by 5-10 minutes for the third 10K section, I only had that happen in 2009. Pleased with the result...but a lot of work for a 14 second PB...

Splits By Year:
2009 - 51:52 / 53:16 (26:36/26:40) / 57:03 = 2:42:11.6
2010 - 49:26 / 50:07 (25:32/24:35) / 50:36 = 2:30:09.2
2012 - 48:10 / 49:09 (24:29/24:39) / 49:56 = 2:27:14.7
2013 - 47:46 / 48:26 (24:00/24:26) / 50:49 = 2:27:00.5
