St. John's Tely 10 -no fog!!

Postby Ken B » Mon Jul 25, 2016 1:21 pm

I registered for this year's Tely 10 Mile Race due to last year's disappointment. Between the fog and the lousy Air Canada service, we arrived in St. John's after the race had ended. This year we flew in on Thursday. The weather in St. John 's this year has been excellent. Lows of 18 - 20 C at night and in the high 20's during the day.
Prerace:
I walked the 1.5 km to pick up my packet on Friday afternoon. No expo, just a running room set up with regular prices for the products. You could spin the wheel for discounts up to 20%. The shirt is okay - nothing special. Names were on the bibs and pick up was simple and quick. The weather on race Sunday was forecast to be cloudy with 40% chance of showers and temperatures between 15 C and going up to 21 C by noon.
Race Day:
I was up by 5:30 AM. The temperature was 19C and humid. Skies were overcast for my 15 minute walk to the buses to take us to the start line in Paradise. By the time we arrived we has intermittent drizzle. We arrived at 7:00 AM and someone opened the sports building to let us get out of the wind and occasional light shower. The wind was quite strong but mostly at our back for the entire race. The course started out with a nice downhill for about 500 metres and then up the steepest hill on the route for 1.5 km. After that there were very gently rolling hills but overall we ran downhill. There were a couple of short steeper hills near the finish but they were not bad at all. WE did get his with about 10m minutes of a heavy shower shortly after we started. Then, about halfway, the sun came out and conditions rapidly heated up. There were many people obviously suffering from the heat and humidity by then. I took a couple of walk breaks on the short hills as my heart rate was getting too high. My target time was 90 minutes and I was monitoring my pace to try and finish in that time. Despite the walking, my gun time was 88:33 and my chip time was exactly 87 minutes.
Overall, I was pleased with the race. The course is excellent, the organization was good and the weather wasn't too much a factor.
Overall I finished as follows:
Age Group - 6/39
Male - 667/1719
Over All - 946/4349
It was interesting for me to note my pace per km and the heart rate connected to that km.
KM Pace(min/km) HR(bpm)
1 5:47 136
2 5:11 143
3 5:07 142
4 5:10 145
5 5:17 149
6 5:08 149
7 5:07 148
8 5:09 149
9 5:08 151
10 5:45 150 - first walk break
11 5:17 154
12 5:46 154 - second walk break
13 5:41 154 - stopped to take some water at an aid station
14 5:27 156
15 6:09 155 - a took a longer walk break up the last hill
16 5:04 158
17 100m 5:06 162
Overall, a very positive experience. If it wasn't do far away I would run this event again. It is a great destination race!!

Yep! In addition to running against a strong wind, hot and humid conditions affect me adversely.

Congrats, I heard it was a hot day. The issue in NFLD is that they never train in those conditions. Ran the race in 2013 and it was the same conditions. I actually cramped up really bad around the 10k mark and had the walk the last 6k. Planning on next year and hopefully I can break 2 hrs this time.
Next up:

Feb 2015 - Castaway Key 5k
March 2015 - St. Patrick's Day 10k
May 2015 - ORW 1/2 Marathon

Another spectacular result Ken! That's a great time for 10 miles!
