Turkey: Fresh or Frozen

Postby hyajil » Mon Sep 29, 2008 10:13 am

I'm hosting an early Thanksgiving this Saturday and trying to decide if getting a fresh turkey is good idea.

What do you do? If you buy fresh, where do you get it? How far in advance do you have to order?

Sorry, I'm no help to you. This year I have THREE Thanksgiving dinners to go to - one on Saturday, one on Sunday, and one on Monday. Image

Thank GOD I am running a half mary on Saturday morning to burn a few of those calories before digging in! Image

I have done very few turkeys...but they have all been frozen...so I can't say which worked better for me...

(What time is dinner?)

5 full (PR 3:48:21)
...and a smattering of adventure and trail races thrown in for good measure!

I always get frozen. The only problem with that is to make sure you give it lots of time to thaw!

There were fresh turkeys at my grocery store last year. I've never had one though. I think they may have had some early since I remember my mother making a comment about the number of days a fresh turkey could sit in the store before becoming questionable.

I know that at the organic butcher near me you have to have ordered the turkey months and months in advance to get a fresh one.

And, since it takes about three days in the fridge for a frozen one to thaw, decide soon. ;)

We switched to fresh a few years ago; there is no comparison to frozen, go fresh.

Ok, I'm convinced (twisting my rubber arm mind you). Thanks all!

I've never roasted one, it's always been my DH who prepares the bird, stuffs it and cuts it. I make the stuffing. I'd vote fresh any day.

Fresh free-range, usually organic. It's more expensive for sure, but we buy it only once or twice per year. This year we won't be home so we aren't buying a turkey anyway.

Around here you can order the organic ones in advance, about a month. You can order a "utility" turkey (missing a wing or a leg or soemthing) and it's cheaper.
