Steel Cut Oats?

Postby RayMan » Tue Oct 28, 2008 6:15 pm

I tried the search feature and got seemingly hundreds of threads that had nothing to do with this yummy topic.

Can anyone with more computer savvy point me to the crockpot recipe that was posted over a year ago?

Cheers

In the slow cooker, ready to go. Should have a yummy breakfast tomorrow morning. Used raisins and almonds for this one.

How did you like it? I love this recipe. If only I remember to put it together the night before.

I cooked it for 7 hours. A little dry but I heated some milk and added it to it. Yummy and filling. Should sustain me for 3 hours of volunteer work in my daughters Kindergarten class.

On Sundays I make a batch and each morning I put in some frozen berries while it is heating up and have enjoyed it all week

I just made a stove-top version of the Loblaws Blue Menu Steel Cut Oats and added brown sugar, raisin, walnuts & cinnamon. YUMMY! I am full full full. :P

Thanks for the suggestions!

Next time I'm going to try adding some Quinoa as Jgore mentioned in the other thread. I'll let you know how that turns out.

Well, the strangest thing happened to me today at the grocery store. I got stuck in an aisle and as I was waiting to move forward I turned to my right and...voila! Steel cut oats were staring me in the face. I grabbed a bag and just finished prepping the "original" recipe as posted by MiniT. I hope it turns out and that my slow cooker doesn't kill it.

You know, so far RM has fed me (brownies and a few other recipes), and clothed me (UA running bra, Sugoi tights). I think that's pretty good. :D

Ha! I saw them yesterday when I was at Superstore and had been intrigued by all the discussion here so I picked some up...Cooked them last night and prepackaged them into breakfast sized meals...just finished my first bowl...mmmm a teeny sprinkling of sugar and a dollop of milk...I like the texture - not as mushy as regular rolled oats..(.but then I have been known to undercook rolled oats so they remain a little 'crunchy' 8) )

I had this for breakfast today and it wasn't bad. I axed the brown sugar though - my nutrition plan calls for limiting sugar. I put about two teaspoons of organic sugar and it tasted fine. I didn't have any raisins but will get some, they would sweeten it up a bit. I just added apples, cinnamon and almonds.

I have made it a couple of times now -- I don't add any sugar -- the raisins and dates sweeten it up nicely.... I have to play with the cook time though -- I did 9 hours -- too much! I did 7 hours - too much! (and that's with the slow cooker on LOW!

It is tasty though.....

I ended up shutting mine off at 6hrs 20mins, on low, and that was perfect for me. I have to remember that the next time I make them.

I am very disappointed in that I forgot my lunch box at home today. It had my morning oats snack in it. Now I have to settle for popcorn or something else from the kitchen that I'll have to pay for

Well apparently I should have read the WHOLE discussion because after 9 hrs mine were VERY burnt and I hardly had 2 servings that I could scrape out! I'm hoping the slow cooker survives.......

I made them last weekend and they came out great after nine hours..... hmmmm I may make them again tonight! Maybe it is because my slow cooker is 30 years old and doesn't work very efficiently that they come out not burnt after nine hours!

You also want a small cooker to avoid burning them I suspect. I've been thrilled with my el cheapo tiny unit (1.5 qts) that is perfect for oatmeal. I leave it on 9 hours and it's perfect!

I think I"ll try it during the day when I can watch and check on it. I'd double it but it probably is just too much oatmeal for the two of us.

This week I've been making steel cut oats with red river cereal on the stovetop. 22 minutes of simmering and it's done. I stir about 3 -4 times. I've been putting in cranberries and cinnamon and when it's all cooked a smattering of toasted almonds & milk.

Yum-ers!

I busted out the Red River this weekend too. Forgot how delicious it is. I like a hint of maple syrup.

I always leave mine on over night, and I use a big slowcooker. I just add extra water and it seems to be okay. YMMV. Mine makes 4 generous servings, and I put the extras in tupperware to be reheated the next day.
