The evidence on "Superfoods"

Postby La » Tue Jun 25, 2013 9:55 am

http://www.nhs.uk/LiveWell/Superfoods/P ... foods.aspx

I've always been skeptical of any claims of a food being "super" (especially when used as a health claim on processed foods containing said "superfoods"). The review of the evidence in the link above is quite good. Looks like Beet Juice does live up to its claim of helping athletic performance in inactive and recreational athletes, but not in elite althletes.

Bottom line: Eat your veggies! All of them! Variety is not just the spice of life, but likely the road to good health, too.

Don't know that I've ever (knowingly) had goji berries. The rest of the stuff on the list I eat regularly. Except maybe wheatgrass. I've had it, but it's not part of my regular diet. And I don't drink juice, so I only eat pomagranates in the winter when they're available.

my mom went through a goji kick a few years ago... so I've had it (in juice form). They're not bad.

My mother goes through kicks of ANYTHING labeled a super/miracle food/cure, especially if some "expert" tells her so. She interprets "X is good for you" as, "Eat as much of X as you can."

a highschool friend of mine is now selling miracle instant coffee. oh wait, it's not called that. It's called OrganoGold, and it's "pre-brewed" coffee, and they've added a special ingredient: "All of the products feature the "KING OF HERBS" the LIFE CHANGING ingredient... Ganoderma!".

So I can improve my life and health by drinking fortified instant coffee!

And, remember, if you had beets the night before, and you have a morning hangover, and go for a pee, don't freak out, when you look down in the toilet ...   :shifty:

I think anyone who's been running long enough to post on this forum knows not to believe any marketing crap. Oh how I loathe marketing! I'd probably be excellent at it.

Let's rid English of superfluous words.

Back on topic....
Beet juice is definitely an acquired taste. But after some trial and error I'd say all you really need is 1x 3hrs before. I used to take 500ml a day for a week - it was stupid, and for instance, you couldn't get it in the states (for some reason Whole foods and everywhere else in Boston didn't sell it!) I was SOL and the effects dried up come race day.

But a bottle before Sportinglife and I felt it much easier to race at high effort.

There was a booth at a race expo selling bags of dried goji berries - I actually had to take a closer look because I thought they were bags of cat kibble

My FIL was growing beets last year and they were MONSTERS, he gave me about 80 pounds of beets, I juiced them for a couple of weeks and drank the juice, I felt better but I was NOT pleasant to live with or follow into the bathroom. Enough said.

weird that I didn't notice it sooner (but probably because I tend to just automatically order my favourites instead of looking at the menu).

It was October's special so there would have been a bunch of ads up for it in Oct (or should have been). It was so popular they kept it on.

We're taking the kids to Booster Juice tonight after Boy's Gold Medal soccer game for his house league. I might just have to try that one...since some FREE smoothie coupons magically appeared in my mailbox.

The evidence on "Superfoods"

Postby deerdree » Thu Jun 27, 2013 4:32 pm

I've been drinking beet juice (and green juice - spinach, cucumber, celery, parsley, lemon) lately. I started with the beet juice because I read a blog where the author said she drank some beet juice and hours lately had a surge of creativity. Thinking it couldn't hurt, I tried it to help with my thesis writing. No luck.

I do feel better and more energized drinking the veggie juices in general, though. At first I was drinking them as smoothies so get the fibre, but my stomach couldn't handle that many veggies.
