Bread Machines>> Kitchen Gadgets

Postby Spirit Unleashed » Thu Mar 05, 2015 8:19 am

I am considering buying a bread machine.

Those of you that have them, what are the plusses or minuses of various brands?

My mom has one. She bought it in let's say 1999? We made lots of loaves and cinnamon buns. They were delicious.

The machine has just been sitting there since 2000 at least. :shifty:

I have 2. I love them.
They are Panasonic Brand' SD-BT56P

I use them weekly. Simple and easy, great recipes for bread, buns, sweet dough., pizza dough. The best thing about this bread machine is that it only makes one size loaf, 1 lb, most machines make a huge loaf, or two sizes with the smallest size being 1.5 lbs. It is the perfect size for a family of 3. The slices fit into a regular toaster.
The only flop I've ever had is when I didn't put the paddle in right, so not the machines fault, but my own.

I doubt you can even buy this model anymore, but I was just on eBay and saw some (used).

I've had bread from other machines, and maybe I'm biased, but I think this one make the best bread.

I love mine so much!! It literally takes 5 min or less to put all the stuff in, and you press two buttons, and that's it. I tried so many times to make bread on my own and it always failed. The bread machine has saved us tons of money and the bread is delicious! You need to follow the recipe to the letter and put the ingredients in the machine in order.
Mine is a black and decker- I got it from my local frugal mommy group for free. I found the manual online. Check kijiji or a similar local free cycle group, as there are MANY people who get the machines and don't use them!

It is possible I could find a person who wants to do a long term loan. Great idea.

After discussion with Habs, a Panasonic was ordered.
It is sitting on my door step.

Great, pressure is on. If it doesn't live up to expectations it will be my fault.

when you use a bread machine, is it like, you dump in the ingredients and eventually out pops a loaf of bread, or are you using it for mixing and such and then baking in the oven? i'm assuming when you mention things like pizza dough, it's the latter. what about buns?

It can be used either way. For a regular loaf of bread, you just dump it all in and turn it on. For pizza dough and other things, you'd just use it to mix and proof the dough, then take it out for some other use (though I suspect some might be to return it to the bread maker for baking). It's been years since I used one, so I'm sure the functionality is different with newer models.

I am dumping and out pops a loaf situation.
I'm doing this to get bread made of only what I put in it.

I use it for both. Right now it's baking bread. I came in from my run and my houses smells wonderful!
When using it for pizza, buns, cinnamon buns, bagels, it just does the mixing and proofing. The rest is up to me.

The only complaints I have about ours is that the loaves are pretty small and they always have a hole in the bottom from the dough hook. But they turn out really well.

Anyone have a recommendation for a toaster to use on the bread? We replaced a broken toaster with one from KitchenAid and it sucks, it has no power. The old toaster I used to be able to toast a frozen bagel on the medium setting, the new one I have to thaw it out and use the maximum setting and even then it takes forever.

If you followed a recipe from the book, it should be fine.

Inside is ok. Taste is a bit low on salt at first; then I got used to it and it didn't matter. I accidentally bought unsalted butter. Recipe is standard bread machine recipe from book that came with machine for whole wheat (with about 1/5 white).
