How do you carry your fuel during a marathon?

How do you carry your fuel during a marathon?

Postby Bebette » Thu Sep 01, 2005 7:50 pm

Do you use a fuel belt, carry them in their envelope or dilute them partly in a regular bottle? What factors have you considered in your own case? I am still unsure what to do for Wineglass. Since I am generally taking a gel every 30 minutes, I will need 7-8 for the race, depending whether I hit my target or bonk!
I run because it's fun.

In another life:
3 marathons including Boston twice (PB: 3:47), 6 halfs (PB: 1:45), 6 10k (PB: 46:41) and 3 5ks (PB: 21:00)

For my last one I wore my water belt (the slant style) with 3 gel packs in the zipper pocket, and another clip-on pouch with a couple more.

Don't make the mistake I made at the Towpath Marathon: gel packets stuffed into the pockets of my shorts. When the race photos came in, I looked like Nell Carter in Gimme A Break.

I go through 6 Power Gels in a marathon so I carry them in my water belt which has two pockets on either side..I actually carry eight, for emergencies sake, and it's a little tight fit (four in each compartment), but manageable... 8)

wow, thats a lot of gels. I must not be using enough. I carry 3 and have 1 15 minutes before the start.

How often do you gel? Thanks

I don't take any before the race..then every second water station, which works out to be about every 1/2 hour for me...went through six in Ottawa and definitely needed them... 8)

4 safety pined inside my shorts. When racing I hate to be wearing anything more than absolutely necessary.

Hey big guy, are those portable carbohydrate packs bulging in your shorts, or are you just happy to see me?

As I think I mentioned, I have control issues :) so I like to carry all my fuel/gatorade and only use the water stations if I happen to be on a walk break through one, or at the very end if everything's run out.
I carry one of those small bottles of gatorade with the sippy top you can buy at convenience stores, and I also put one in my angled water belt.
I bring two harvest powerbars, and keep them in a pocket clipped to my belt. I usually go through 1 1/2 powerbars during a marathon, but it's good to have a bit extra in case.
