HCmD's 2010 Disneyland 1/2 Marathon
HCmD's 2010 Disneyland 1/2 Marathon
What a difference a year makes ... my return to Disneyland was quite a contrast to that of 2009 when I laboured a bit with some achilles tenderness and was just able to complete the event for my first Coast-to-Coast Race Challenge Award ... This year, however, my achilles appeared to have recovered well, and my running has been quite consistent, with a strong summer of training, something that was lacking in 2009 ... During my taper week, my achilles started to tighten up, but more likely due to all the rest that I was taking, and reducing my volume by 2/3 this week, as they seemed to get better once they are warmed-up ... I guess that the body does go through a cycle of recovery during a cutback / taper period, of reduced activities, eh !!!
Anyhoo, the day could not have been better for a race ... a nice and pleasant 62-63F at the start time of 6am and finishing at around 67-68F, at the end ...
For this event, my A Goal was a sub 1:36:xx time goal, which would mean a PB, something that I last ran for a 1/2 Marathon Distance in 2004 at the Fall Colours Marathon (1:36:28), while my B Goal was that perverbial sub 1:40:xx and my C Goal was to run at under my goal marathon pace of 1:45:xx ... I was able to it my B Goal, with a 1:36:40, which is a 9:48 course PB and improvement from last year (2009) where I finished up with a 1:46:12 ...
I quickly found my rythm with an opening 4:45 1st KM split ... while my final KM split was around a 4:10:xx as I realized that a PB was within a distant grasp with 2KM to go, but alas, just missed it by <that much> ... pehaps, that port-a-potty stop at just past the 3K mark may have cost me ... As it turns out, my little port-a-potty break at the 3K mark may have costed me a PB or, the extra .17K that my Garmin said that I may have run extra due to the tangents/turns in the course ..
Anyhoo, not much to say, except that it definitely felt a bit different racing it this year, than it did last year, by just running it to finish ... Looking at the numbers, and comparing last year and this year ... I am totally happy with my performance and result, and hope that this bodes well for me, in the next 5 weeks of training to Chicago 10-10-10 ...

Re: HCmD's 2010 Disneyland 1/2 Marathon
This past week was a cutback/taper week ... in preparation for the Disneyland 1/2 Marathon ...
5 Runs - 46.6K / 4:00:xx
1 Ride - 25K / 1:00:xx
Strange that my achilles was acting funky all week, as a result of my cutback in running, I suspect ... though, did not appear to be an issue during the Disneyland 1/2 Marathon race .. Though, perhaps a sign that I should be taking it easy, and not push it over the top, in my final 5 weeks to Chicago 10-10-10 ..
Though, I felt pretty strong throughout the Disneyland 1/2, and kept a pretty consistent pace throughout, still not sure how or what this will translate to, in a marathon distance At least, I will have a couple of more weeks to figure this out, as I will have at least one more 32K+ lsd run on the schedule before tapering...
If I wasn't a believer in the tapering process before, after this week, I must admit that there is some merit to this logic ...
So, this week will likely be my final build, before tapering down and fine-tuning my training and efforts towards Chicago 10-10-10 ...

Taper totally critical for me!
What an awesome race Andy! Bodes so well for Chicago! Time to start thinking about getting to the startline in good shape!

Way to go Andy!
Sounds like you're having a great season.
I wish I were in some kind of shape, or thought I could back into shape. There may actually be a race at Disney World while we're in Florida in Feb.
