My new ScrewShoes
I bought the screws, 1/4 inch metal screws. They look long.

With winter coming, and me wearing my screwshoes for the first time this year the other day, I figured I'd bump this thread.

Re: My new ScrewShoes
Spent last winter in my first pair of screw shoes. They were made with .5" self tapping sheet metal screws in a ten screw perimeter pattern. No screws under the ball of my foot. I'll never use pull on traction devices again. These things performed perfectly. I get to test them out again today! I think I'll have to buy some paint.

Re: My new ScrewShoes
Screw shoes work like a charm. I used YakTrax for 4 winters before they gave out, then switched to the screw shoes. Cheaper and they work like a charm. (Unlike others, who have reported problems with YakTrax on ice, I even used them during/immediately after ice storms with no problems. There was only 1 time when I was sliding all over the place and that was when there was glare ice hidden under fresh, light snow. Maybe I was just more careful when I could see the ice.)
I use 3/8", #8, galvanized sheet metal screws.

How do you not already own a good variable speed cordless drill? I'm no tool guy but without my Ryobi I'd still be putting together the Ikea furniture we bought in 2005, never mind ever having gotten to the screwshoes.

Re: My new ScrewShoes
I have done the screwed shoes. I find that they are good for some types of conditions which spikes aren't good for. But I have also slipped in them. So BE CAREFUL even if you have screws.

Re: My new ScrewShoes
Question about screw shoes as I am thinking about taking the plunge this winter:
what happens if you have to run partly on dry pavement and partly on icy pavement - do they deteriorate rapidly? do they damage the shoes?

Doesn't hurt the shoes but may wear the screw heads. Just put new ones in.
What I noticed when using screws on pavement is that the screws stick to the pavement which in turn inhibited the way my knee moved. Without a screw, a shoe would be able to rotate or slide a bit in relation to the pavement as you run. So later, after the run, I had a sore knee. But not bad, just noticeable.

Re: My new ScrewShoes
my screw shoe runs were always on snow or icy surfaces (trail and paved pathway) . I don't think it would be too much fun to have them on dry or bare sidewalks and road.

Its not....but I didn't always have 100% coverage of snow. Depended on plowing and salting and sun.

I hear you...around here sometimes the sidewalks are terrible while roads are bare and dry, so crossing streets or running at the side of a road without a sidewalk I sound like a clopping horse with screw shoes or other such solutions
Re: My new ScrewShoes
That's partly why I wouldn't want to use them. Rarely have I been on a run that's 100% on snow.
The Stabilicers I have are fine on pavement-- but I prefer not to use them if I'm just running flat on snow anyway. They were great for going up the Grind.
