Doonst survives the Egg Nog Cruise
Mid December means the Egg Nog Jog, biggest race around these parts. Put on by the Georgetown Runners, rumour has it that I went drinking with them last weekend. Robbie tipped me off that I had made their Facebook page. So all the volunteers were nodding at me, and saying hey.
The weather was supposed to be snowy but we woke up to plus 4 and rain. Just getting into Terra Cotta the ground turned white so I once again had hope. By race time it was rain for sure. Nice big and warm tent before, caught up with Ken (Tortoise) and many locals. The race is 11 minutes from my home, so its definitely the social event of the running season around here. It sold out at 600 people, but only 376 showed (finishers). What a bunch of weather weenies.
I have had a strained calf for almost 3 weeks. First I called it a sore calf, then I read that Anton Krupika has a strained calf so that's what I call it now. It was getting better then a week ago I restrained it. Both the initial and secondary incidents were hill related so I was hesitant to do this race. Tuesday I was about 75% sure I wouldn't even jog it. Thursday went better, so I didn't sell my bib. Still even yesterday hiking I felt like somebody (maybe Dave) hit me in the calf with a baseball bat.
So time goal. At first I said none at all, then I started doing the math for a sub one hour. My previous times range from 55:55 (first year of racing) to 50:34. But my calf really hurt. Sub one hour = ~5:35 pace.
First 2 K I stayed with BJH. Splits were sub 5. I was happy with that, trying not to remember when I was sub 4 here. For some reason Barbara seemed to want to talk less once we hit the hills, so eventually I left her be.
The course got a bit slippery on the dirt road section, but there was always some part of the road with better traction. Heather and Tuzo were waiting in the valley at half way. I could hear him coming, bark bark bark. I stopped for about 30 seconds to connect.
I walked the worst part of the hill, to hopefully save my calf. I started running again on the second part, just before the photographer, just a lucky coincidence. My pace before the big hill averaged 5:14. Hill split, 7:06. Average after, 5:33.
Most people didn't want to talk much after the hill; I actually saw one guy throwing up around the 6 K mark. I was feeling pretty good, realizing that my calf was better than it has been. Still I had a ways to go, and just because my cardio wasn't being taxed as much as usual, I was wise to continue running careful.
My calf gave me a bit of a reminder with about 2 K to go that this was the farthest and hilliest run I've attempted in over 3 weeks. I backed off a bit and all was fine. One more twinge 5 minutes later, backed off again. Somehow, just after the downhill curve at the 10 K mark, I got away with a fast finish: last 800 M at sub 4 minute pace. Ended up just behind someone I know, that always seems to happen. No pain! Final time 57:27.
Fun times after, hanging with the maniac gang. Egg nog, yogurt and bananas, but oh, the soup and rolls, just the thing after a December race. 3 maniacs in the top 8 , even if they don't all post much anymore. We stayed until Robbie and Anne Elizabeth went up for their awards. Fun times! Best news for me is that I am on the mend, I'll live to race again.

Nice race, better to scale it back then hurt something even worse. I will have to run that race one of these days.

Good run Doonst, even with the crappy weather and the wonky calf. That Dave guy is sneaky so it may have been him with the bat. Rest up, enjoy the holidays, and back at it in the new year.

For the calf, I did hiking, spinning, and iced it after running short and easy. Some heel drops and as always I use a wobble board every morning.

Congrats on another race, doonst! You beat Ron Gehl by about half a minute! Way to go!
Rest up and let that calf heal. Winter is the worst time to run on a strained calf.

Sounds like a good day Sheldon!
Crappy weather though - I looked out the window and thought of all you maniacs who were running this yesterday.
Glad to hear you are healing up.
