oh, I thought I had a plan, and now it's all up in the air. :( I hate to say it, but I think running is going to the backburner in 2011 for me... so that I can focus on some other stuff that is more important (I know it's hard to imagine anything being more important! :). so... I think I'm just going to wing it. If I can still swing it, I would at least love to do White River again, because I loved that race so much and want to go back every year. :) And I might actually do a few of the local races this year (amazingly, I haven't done any of the local trail races yet!).

What are your plans, K?

Does the Frozen Ass 50 count? I might take another shot at the Fast Trax race in June, although going past 50K on a firm surface no longer seems appealing after Victoria this year.

There's already a bit of planning and talking in the OUSER 2011 calendar discussion, but that's mostly limited to the Ontario Ultra Series.

The viking and I have a few ultras we'd like to do this year, but a lot of it is going to be 'winging' because there may be unforeseen events and opportunities to run far from home. So many races, so little (vacation) time... We'll probably be racing closer to home and supporting a lot of the local ultras in one form or another.

Here's our tentative line-up/wish list for 2011. Some may or may not happen due to work schedule, budget, injuries, logistics, etc. We'll see...

Feb.12-13 - Beast of Burden 100 miler
Apr.16 - Seaton 50 miler
May 28-29 - Sulphur Springs 100 miler
Jun.11 - Laurel Highlands 77 miler
Jun.18 - Niagara Ultra 50k
Jul.2 - Creemore Vertical Challenge 50k
Jul.16 - Limberlost Challenge (the longest distance they offer)
Aug.6 - Dirty Girls 12hr night or 24hr
Sep.10-11 - Haliburton Forest 100 miler
Oct.15 - Vulture Bait 50k
Oct.29/30 - TBD (Horror Hill 6hr or Runs with Scissors Double Trail Marathon)
Nov.5 - Mendon Ponds 50k
Ultrarunner again

I'm looking at Voyageur 50 again this year. Maybe Lemming Loop if it doesn't interfere with QCM.
Plan for 2017:
END-SURE 25k...done! 2:30:23
Spruce Woods Ultra volunteering...done!
Kettle Moraine 100
Western States 100 crewing
Falcon Fatass 50k
Superior 100

I plan at least 2 50k's (but those are not really ultras  )

Lunar trek (July) (I loved/hated/became addicted to running all night)
Dogwood Canyon (last of October) (because my secret boyfriend went in it this year and is going back next year)
Another 50k in September (either Rock Bridge Revenge or Lineville)
Athlete....Maniac 973....Marathon Maniac 6645

Lots I would love to do, but my body just hasn't cooperated to make it happen in 2011. I will probably limit myself to doing 25K at Blackfoot and then take another crack at Lost Soul 53K in the fall. Plus I hope to do some fun runs on the trails in the mountains this year. If things continue to go well in 2011 as I get restarted - again - I will try my first 100K in 2012.

THis year is going to be a down year because of budget issues. So I am looking at the Iron Horse 100 miler in May, and then Cascade Crest 100 miler in August. If I can squeeze anything else in I will but most likely it will be lots of miles in the mountains with the group I run with. For those of you wanting a race in the Calgary area don't forget about either Iron Legs 50 miler and relay and also Moose Mountain Trail Races, both sold out last year so don't wait to long if you are interested.

it sells out right away, so register as soon as it opens (february, if I'm not mistaken).

Whatever  50 km is an ultra. It depends on the terrain, they all have their beasts in them. Even a 50km ultra on pavement isn't exactly "easy" but is still a real ultra IMHO.

Just to be clear and close a can of worms before they make a mess...

Of course 50K is an "ultra". For a 42K specialist and nature wuss like me, I only have the guts to do the occasional flat 50K as a supported extra-long training run. Most ultras are either much longer or much harder (or both) than the ones I've done and I wouldn't want to dilute the accomplishments of those who tackle the real monsters by using the "U" word too casually.

I'm also in the "50k is an ultra" camp. Just try standing at the finish line of any marathon and tell the finishers that they need to run another 7.2km. I'll bet a lot of them will try and punch you in the face.

Well, I will be delving into the Ultra World for the first time when I run the Dirty Girls 6-hour race in August -- not sure what distance I will be able to cover during those 6 hours, but I'm hoping to become an Ultra-runner at that time...

If not, I will have to try again in the fall ... there are a couple of races on my radar ... so much depends on whether I qualify for Boston in May or not.... :D
2014:
Mar - Around the Bay 30 km - Done
May - Sulphur Spring 100 miler - DNS
Sept - Army HM
Sept/Oct - 50 miler
Oct - Pace Bunny - Toronto Scotia Waterfront
Dec - Reggae Marathon in Jamaica

Well, not sure this counts as it isn't a race, or even an offical event, but I'm gearing up for a Rim to Rim to Rim Grand Canyon run on Sept 10th. Depending on how my training goes I might do some real events either before or after.

Oh gosh only 50 km... I am being hopeful about that, but just can't leave the unfinished business... haha :) So it's back to running loops at Chickakoo on the weekends.

I'd love to run this one also. Are you running it solo or with a group?

There's two of us for sure with another couple of "maybes". The other "for sure" guy is a 65 yr old ultrarunner from Ottawa and the "maybes" are both ultrarunners from the southern US. None of us have done the Grand Canyon before so it could be a remake of Dumb and Dumber.

I'm eyeballing the Iron Legs website as the timing on that as a test of my fitness would be perfect. Decisions ..decisions... :)

Bighorn 100 for sure, probably Voyageur 50 again, and maybe another 50 or 100 miler in the fall (October or later).

Of course, being race director for two ultras too is almost as hard as running them :-)
