OrleansRunner runs Ottawa NCM
This was the 3rd time I ran this event, but the first time I actually raced it...
Andy kindly agreed to pace me in my BQ attempt.....
The training went pretty well for this season, until I developed PF issues.... the foot has been sore for quite some time now, protesting and telling me to "give it up" and "let me rest"....
So I made a deal with the foot that if I could just run Ottawa, then I would rest.... so I got through today (details below), and now it's the foot's turn...
I met up with Andy at our usual meeting spot downtown. We lined in just ahead of the 3:50 bunny we waited a few minutes, and the alarm went off to start the race.... the weather was much better than expected in that it was misting, but not too humid, albeit a little warmer than I would have liked in a perfect world.
The first several km were fairly uneventful, just falling into our pace and enjoying the new route. Just after 7 km, we saw the first RM cheering squad (thanks guys), then continued on our way. Hit 10 km at 53:39, feeling good. Went through Gatineau, and then off to Rockliffe, hitting 21.1 km at 1:55:XX. Around 23 km, my left hamstring started tightening up, and I had to take a few extra walk breaks. I was able to hold on to the pace fairly well, although walking more often than I would have liked to give the hamstring a chance to recover -- hit 30 km at 2:45:33, still on pace for the A++ goal of 3:55.
At around 33 km is when the trouble really started, having to walk much more often because that hamstring just would not stop complaining. So 33 km onwards, was lots of running 200-300 m, then walking 30 secs or so, and so on and so on.... Through all of this, Andy was UBER patient. Never said a word, did not roll his eyes, just walked with me, and ran when I was ready to run.... Andy, you are the best!!!
At about the 36 km mark, the 4:00 hour bunny passed us, which was a little disheartening since now my A+ goal was out the window. However, I was determined to at least reach my A goal - that BQ!!
Plugged along with more walking and running, and got 'er done in 4:02:54, and 17 minute PB and a BQ.....
I am happy with this for sure.... Will just have to wait and see if it's enough to get me into Boston 2012!!
Thanks again Andy -- I really could not have motored through without you -- you were very supportive, a calm and talented bunny!!
I will rest the foot, see how everything is feeling in a few weeks, and see if I attempt another marathon before September to try and secure a spot in Boston....
More to follow....... thanks for reading

Congratulations, Sylvie! All things considered I'm very happy to see this strong finish. Huge PB and a small cushion on the BQ- I really hope that gets you in. Sorry the pains started to vex you after 33k- the marathon is a tough beast!!

Congratulations, on an humungus PB and Boston Qualifier, Sylvie .. You showed a lot of guts and determination today, as agonizing as you were feeling, I could see ithe pain and strai that you must have been experiencing in your face, in particular, the final 9-10K, knowing that carrot / prize was within your reach and never faulted ....
As for a Summer Marathon, Edmonton appears to be choice of Maniacs ... It would be so sweet if you and Susan (Habs) ran together for that sub 4 hour marathon ...
Congratulations, again ... and, thanks for lunch ...

Great result, fully earned with your training. Don't sweat on Boston; you did your part today and you can go lower in the future once you get back to 100%.
