Double Bellybuster – Detroit Turkey Trot 10K

Postby Double Bellybuster » Sat Nov 26, 2011 1:07 am

I didn’t know what to expect at this one. I was coming off a disastrous race after months of preparation and a good race after a couple days of notice of the race.

The word on the Internet was that this was a tough race to PB due to a shared start for the 5K and 10K, which meant 21,000+ starters this year. As long as I was aware, I held some hope as my Marathon PB came in a race of 45,000+ after I had heard similar.

Cupcake Girl & I rolled into Detroit Wednesday but did not get to bed until Midnight as we attended the Red Wings-Flames game. So short rest with a 5:45 alarm for the 7:45 start. But worse once the fire alarm went off at 1:40. This was the view outside the hotel as we waited for a fire on an upper floor to be put out:

So not to sleep until ater 3:00. Perfect weather (for racing) when we woke up. 1 degree outside. My usual fashion disaster:

As advertised, the first K was slow – the first 600m was narrow downtown streets that went halfway aroud the traffic circle surrounding Campus Artius Park then made four turns before getting to wide Woodward Avenue that was closed for the parade to follow. While I hustled, I barely broke 5 minutes for the first K with all the passing and jostling for room.

My PB was 45:41, 4:34/K. So I knew I needed around 4:30/K for the remainder as I lost 23 seconds to my current PB pace in the first K and was likely running some extra distance with the course having 15 90-degree and 3 hairpin turns over the route and a lot of runners to negotiate the turns with.

It went OK. With the cool weather, I was able to push around 4:30/K with the effort I would expect to feel at 4:35/K. After the three hairpin turns, I got a few 'F*%# You' comments from slower runners that didn't like my Packers jersey before the Lions were to be served up in an early afternoon game. Didn’t even lose the mittens and hat until 7K. I had some side stitches at times over the last half but was able to push through it.

45:24, 4:32/K

40/405 M35-39
504/7504 Overall

With the slow first K and the 11 seconds left to run beyond 10K due to wide corners, I guess I may have a realistic shot at breaking 45 minutes if I can find the right combination of similar cool day and a less congested course.

But real happy with this one. :D

This broken wing will fly again
One fine day
This blackbird's mute gonna sing again
One fine day

So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out

Well done & it takes alot of ball$ to were a Packers jersey in the Detroit before the classic Thanksgiving Day Game, 'good on ya!' :-bd ^:)^ It reminds me when I was 11 or 12 and I wore my Canadiens jersey to Maple Leaf Gardens when the Habs were in town.

Nice race. :)

Glad you're having some satisfying races now. It's hard when we put all our training eggs in one basket. The marathon isn't the only race. :)

Great report.

Making a trip to Detroit without getting shot is a success in itself. To add a great race to that is icing on the cake.

You guys kill me. Well done DBB and CC. Maybe a beer at the beginning would have put you sub-45. Still an awesome showing.
