I just got this today... an insider update from a Burlington runner regarding the trail conditions on the G.Donald Trail, aka the swamp.

There was a section of trail in the sulphur springs race around 11k into the 20k loop that last year was almost swamp like and very wet - supposedly the trail section is being repaired and gravel is being put down this week. It should be repaired soon and I will let you know what it is like.

By the way, the trails in Dundas Valley have been in amazing shape. We should see some fast times this year.

That’s great news Kinga . I didn’t see the point in making us run through a swamp. It’s one thing if something is in the way …yup we are trail runners we go right through but it’s quite another when you intentionally direct us through the hazard! Another thing to consider was the impact to the wet lands. First loop it was a narrow trail though a wet mucky area. I remember thinking what swamp? A day later it was a pond devoid of vegetation trampled down. So it’s a win/win situation , both mother nature and the runners will benefit.

I know for sure that I will have much faster time this year, I am doing half the distance

It is good news that they are fixing that wet area. You're right, that swamp was a deepening lake at the end of the event after runners went through there hundreds of times. I'm not a fan of gravel, but it's better that they fix that spot somehow, because all the hills drain there. I wish they had re-routed us so we give the area a break.

Anyhoo, there should be some fast times at Sulphur this year. I'm looking forward to seeing people tear up the course. I for one won't be one of those fast ones.

I'm signing up for the 100, but not sure if I'll do the whole thing. I've been struggling with some post-HURT100 issues all February and March and I've just started building up to 50k. Plus, 2 weeks after Sulphur I'm doing Laurel Highlands 70 miler in Pennsylvania and I should save my legs for that one.

Time for a intervention for UltraQueenga.

Something to snap you out of running ultras, like putting you on a treadmill and forcing you to watch Jerry Springer for a day..... :D

I am going to do the 50 k and then cheer people on.

Still no gravel in the swamp, but the way this spring is going also no water in the swamp, perhaps the are waiting for water so they can tell where they want the gravel...

Yeah, I did have an intervention of sorts. It's called sore hip or 'tragically hip'. I got messed up from the pre-HURT training (too many hills, not enough running, LOL). Anyway, February and March were miserable. You can think of it as an intervention, minus the treadmill and Jerry Springer. That sounds like a cruel thing to do... akin to the scene in A Clockwork Orange where they make the guy watch the screen.

Good news is I am running again. I signed up for the 100 hoping to do 100 miles, but if things are not feeling a-ok, I will not be afraid to pull the plug at 100k and sit in a chair and throw beer caps and popcorn at the 100 milers. ;)

In other news, please see thread re: Night run at Sulphur on Friday, May 4.

The race instructions indicate that for the 100 miler a pacer can only join you on the last two loops. Is this correct? (I am asking for a friend, not myself. I am doing a measly 50 miles there  )

It is after 8:00pm for sure and the site does say last 2 loops. Reading Chris's RR from 2010 he did get "authorization" from the RD to join sooner

Loop 6 (100-120k) Into the actual darkness
Pacers are not allowed on the course until 8pm so Gregoire talked to the race director and got permission to join me at the 10k point.

So I guess you can always ask!

I suck! I finally went to the SS registration page today and the 50K is sold out! And I'm the guy that normally registers ridiculously early for everything!

If anyone is injured out there, please PM me. I will take your bib.

Thanks!

I got the 'weekly bog report' from a running buddy who went out on Saturday for a 1.5 loop on the course.

... the Bog is still the same old bog, not sure if they could actually get it debogged before the race. The good news is that it was muddy but not too much water so I veered left again and very dry . If the weather continues i.e dry not much rain then the bog will probably not be an issue.

The rest of the trails were great only some minor wet spots

So, everyone, keep your fingers crossed for some dry weather and also, maybe maybe maybe the conservation authority goes in and 'fixes' the bog.
But best, prepare for some mud through that section.

My wife just came back and the gravel is down,no mud hardly seems like sulphur anymore. I guess one pair of shoes will make it this year.

So where do I make my Ultra Debut? Creemore and Limberlost appear to be the best dates. is 50K at Creemore easier than 56K at Limberlost? Any tips are welcomed.

I've done a 10k Trail Race before so that makes this a snap, right?

DBB, I went in a technical 50k as my first ultra, on a hot humid July day. It took me 8h38, but I survived, and wanted to sign up again the next day.

You can do a 50k. Its more a matter of keeping going; not like road racing at all.

If your looking for "trail" style ultra definitely limberlost.Creemore is alot of exposed running on gravel roads. As for challenging creemore is entirely flat with not a hill in sight.
