Robbie-T @ Chase the Coyote Trail Race

Postby Robbie-T » Sun Sep 30, 2012 6:23 pm

This was the inaugural year for this race it was held at Mono Cliffs, the Bruce Trail goes through it and parts of the race were on the trail.
The long course was 14.5k and had a wide variety of terrain, some double lane, long steep hills, board walks, twisty technical dirt trails, stairs. I'd rate the course 7 out of 10 as far as difficulty for a trail race in these parts.

The day before the race I volunteered to rabbit the XC Separate Elementary school meet for grades 4-8 that my son was in. Which meant 10x1k, I thought this wouldn't damage me too much, maybe I didn't think enough, but wouldn't have missed the chance to do that for the school and Kylar. All of the races took off like their hair was on fire, got going pretty quick through a mostly tight twisty trail with a couple good inclines. A few 4:30 km, a couple 4:10 and a smoking 3:50 that started at sub 3:00 pace. Left my legs a bit tired by the end to say the least.

I wasn't sure what kind of competition would show up for the trail race as the course was out of the way and there are a bunch of other big races going on this weekend and in the next couple weekends. But it turned out a bunch of solid runners did show up, including at few young 15 minute guys. Sure I can run with these kids.

Doonst, Heather, Heather, Tuzo and BMan were all in attendance

They have also created a challenge, if men finish the race in under 60 mins they get free entry for next year, women under 70 mins.
The race starts, and we are off pretty quick, after about 500m I'm pretty much all on my own for the rest of the entire race. I kept seeing one guy in front of my about 30s or so, and made some headway on him at one point until he saw me creeping up.

so 4:00 km for the first two then up a steep long hill that chokes me up. Twisty turning then a huge other steep hill with a big set of stairs in it. A bunch of stuff here and there. A section from about 7-10k kind of went on forever, twisty trail while on an incline. I knew at about 10-11k the rest of the course was mostly down hill, here I tried to pick it up and was doing just over 4:00 pace for the most part and that is where I was making some ground. About 2k from the finish I was thinking man a good run through the trails and taking some risks stepping through rocks and roots and no twisted ankles. Until then, twisted the left one again, not real bad but enough to smarten me up.

Finally the finish is here and I'm 8th overall first Master 1:04:23, very happy with that, super nice day and great trail course.
The over all winner won Run for the Toad last year, yah he is quick, this was only his second trail race, Toad his first, he must have be flying through.
I received a nice dark chocolate medal, some socks and duffel bag.

This event was very well managed, lots of happy friendly people out, made for a top quality day.

What a day! That's a sweet victory, pun intended. You ARE the master!
next up:

This broken wing will fly again
One fine day
This blackbird's mute gonna sing again
One fine day

So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out
Come into the light of one fine day
