Long story short. Joined the GoodGuysTri team, 26 of us running the FULL 100km from Ottawa to Montebello (as a team) on Oct 5th in support of the Sears Great Canadian Run to End Kids Cancer

If you have the time please read my participation page. Also tomorrow if you're by Ikea, stop by at Sears to say hi. We're having a fundraising event for the 100km run. A $20 donation gets you an entry in a draw to win a treadmill.

Great run...and thanks for helping support kids cancers. Seeing a kid, or adult for that matter with cancer and you'll never want to see that again.

What you don't realize is how much harder the treatments are on the kids than adults. They were saying Thursday that sometimes the treatment is worse than the disease, but they are making amazing strides in curing children's cancer, you think they are the same (kids and adult) but they aren't. Kick off was on Thursday and it sure hit home how important this event is....

I didn't know that...and part of me wishes I still didn't know. I've watched my father & mother go through chemo, sat in the room with them as the treatment was happening. I can't imagine how it must feel being worse, or being the parent of the kid having to watch it. My heart is breaking just thinking about it. It puts alot in perspectives when I complain about a sore heel, or a bad day at work.

I've sat in that chair getting chemo at a couple of different periods in my life and it certainly is hard. I went through it while I was in my 20's and not as a child though. The physical toll it takes on you is one thing, but there is also the mental aspect of it and I think that it is really hard for children and young adults just because they don't have the life experience to try and reconcile everything that is happening. In some ways that may be good, but in other ways it can really cause issues down the road if there isn't a good support mechanism in place.

Good on you for helping out Strider, great stuff!

The other issue with children and young adults is that when they do survive the treatment and are cured of the cancer there are often new (different) cancers that develop later in life because of the radiation treatment. :(

That looks like a great event David. Nice work.

To add to this...sometimes other "stuff happens"

Spencer Dolling had a young friend diagnosed after he was diagnosed. This young girl had a bit of a crush on Spencer. At one point she was asked by her Mom if she was going to marry Spencer. Her wise response:.."well...maybe...let's face it...we've seen each other at our worst".

This young lady is now 17...and things are not looking that great. One of the things she's dealing with is because of all the chemo/radiation to her brain she's dealing with the onset of dementia
tia. Very sad.

ETA: good work Dave...wonderful that you are doing this.

Not just new cancers that develop, but long term ramifications. DH has hearing loss and balance issues as a result of radiation, chemo, and surgery as a child. My sister is going through premature menopause as a result. These are just a few if the physical consequences. There are many other pscho-social issues they have dealt with as well.

It is an amazing group of people to be working with doing this endeavour. There will be more fund raising events as we head towards the BIG day on Oct 5th.

I will post as new events or opportunities come up. Thanks for your support

Here is one now :)

Joseph Rios is a member of our team for the Run to End Kids cancer. For each like he gets on his picture of a Koala, he's going to donate $1.00. It's no gimmick

Also next Saturday there will be a Boot Camp at Walter Baker Park Hill in Kanata - 8:30am (Mrs and I will be there)

Here is the link to the 2013 kick off Run to End Kids Cancer video documenting Steve's completion of the event last year, and the inspiration for 26 of us to do it this year.

Please consider supporting us - participation page.

Also Mike received this note about the video...the inspirations keep coming

"... My son Isaac is featured at the beginning - he's the one in the super hero costume ( & a few other pics). Thank you so much for doing this. It is an incredible personal accomplishment and so very meaningful to families dealing with childhood cancer. I wish I could properly convey how deeply grateful we all are to you; that you dedicate this incredible feat to raising money and awareness for our children, it honestly chokes me up & takes my breath away. You definitely are a 'good guy'. Amazing, inspiring, hopeful. Thank you."

I only just saw this post! good luck on your run this Saturday. I did the run from Bolton to Blue Mountain on Sept.21 in the pouring rain :D But the sun did come out at the end as we were preparing to finish at Blue Mountain.

And thank you so much for raising funds for this great cause. My nephew just turned 3 in July and is not talking, walking and hardly eating after going through the surgery, radiation and chemo from Ependymoma, a highly recurrent brain tumour. Thankfully, he is currently Cancer free which is a huge miracle, however his struggles will be life long.

If you would like some extra motivation for saturday you can see Nicolas' story here:

Stories like that make running 100km easy. Thanks for sharing.

It is the life long struggles that are one of the key issues, and sometimes it is not the struggle with the disease, but the cure. Childhood cancer is different than adult, and treatments need to be developed specifically for the children.
