Around the Bay 30K announces route change to avoid train delays

The Around the Bay Road Race officials have announced that the 30K route will be altered for the March 30, 2014 event to avoid the train delays that affected the race this year.

The 30K route begins in downtown Hamilton, Ont. and crosses a bridge over the Hamilton Harbour into Burlington, Ont., where it winds up and down some hills before looping back into Hamilton for a dramatic finish inside Copps Coliseum.

The route change only involves the first 10K of the race, and the new course is actually just a reversion back to a previous route along Burlington St. See a map of the adjusted route http://goo.gl/maps/8SMBg .

The historic 30K, first run in 1894, is the oldest continuously running road race in North America, and in recent years has adopted the tagline “Older Than Boston.”

Both Around the Bay and the Boston Marathon have a long history of occasional train tie-ups. In 2009, a rumbling freight train interrupted Around the Bay at the 13K mark, creating a traffic jam of runners and took about 10 minutes to pass.

In one of the most famous train delays that had the potential to affect Canadian marathoning history, Canada’s Tom Longboat was among the 10 frontrunners in the 1907 Boston Marathon who crossed the train tracks in South Framingham before the gates went down to close off the road to the 114 other runners in the race. Longboat went on to win, but runner-up Robert Fowler, who finished 3 minutes behind Longboat, complained bitterly afterward that he wasted a good two minutes waiting for the train.

Anyone interested in making up a three person relay team to try and beat Robbie T?

Have they changed the water stations as well as the route? The jpeg and pdf maps on the race website show the water stations. I don't recall a water station at 17.5K before. The water stations look more evenly spaced than before. I recall in the middle of the race that water stations used to seem few and far between - or was that my imagination?

I registered this week, before the price increase on November 4th. I'm looking forward to going back to Hamilton (not to mention Burlington!). I ran in 2011, and DNS'd in 2012. I'm glad to see they have start corrals now, and even gladder to see that my HM time from this past summer qualifies me for one. 8)

I'm in and registered. No time goals, my better half is registered as well, and this will be her longest distance by far...so I want to see her finish happy rather than try to run faster than 2013.

I dislike big road races, but ATB was OK this year so I'm back.

Marg is Nemo and I am Pepper. If the real Nemo and Pepper were to run, my money would be on Pepper to win in a head-to-head race.

Was hoping to do the 2 person relay but at $125 pp - really? Why is it so exepensive?

It's a charity fundraiser. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the extra dollars go to the St. Joe's.

I also think it's what the market will bear! The relays sold out really fast last year.

that seems crazy to me! way more than the full 30K! I mean, you need the bus transport which is an extra expense, but i agree with you!
