Run4RKids - York University

Postby Robinandamelia » Wed Oct 30, 2013 10:42 am

I missed out on 6 hour Horror Hill so decided to register for this one January 4. Know that some of you have run this event before. Anyone else in? I haven't run on an indoor track in over 30 years, so should be interesting.

If you aren't sure who I am just ask the woman walking in the arm cast. That will be my wife!

Hi Folks,

Does anyone know if this event is taking place in 2015?

I was going to sign up and I do see that several familiar names are there.

But I also see posted on the main webpage:

We chose that the Run4RKids 2015 race will not go on, so we can focus on bringing in necessary funding for communities to receive our programs.

This is taken out of context...though the whole narative is somewhat confusing (aside from the need for fundraising that is clear)

Does anyone know if the statement above predates the registration opening or if it is new?

Thanks!

Yes it is!! someone stepped up to act as race director. They came out with a statement and an email saying that it was in jeopardy unless someone stepped up to help. Someone did so now it's on. They added back the 8 hour event too.

It was my first ultra (last year) and I really liked it (6 hour), so will try my hand or should I say feet, at the 8 hour this year.

So thinking about the 30K for this one. That would fit in pretty well with my training.

Hmmm.... I have until Dec2 to decide.

OK,

I'm in for the 30K@9am.

This is part of my way of finding other ways to enjoy racing besides PBs. Totally different for me!

Will be interesting!

I have not done this one for two years. Not a lot of information on the website - anything useful to know based on last year's experience or communication this year?

Still a projection screen to use for lap pacing?

Still a water table offered so we just need to bring our sports drink, gels and food?

Still tunes over the PA?

How was the temperature last year? I think I recall one year with room temperature and one where it was turned down.

Thanks! Hope your taper, if you believe in that sort of thing, has been festive!

It's new race director this year but I'm assuming nothing's changed, but I don't know. Last year they had the screen with the stats on it as you passed, that was great. They had a water table as well, with food/supplies. I brought my own food though and will again. The temp I found ok last year. The far side of the room cooler as that's where the fan is. It does get warm though but I didn't find it really bad (though I may not be the best judge of that as I'm used to running on TM upstairs in my house).

They did play songs over the PA system which was great, except when I had to listen to Gangham Style for the 5th time or so lol. Kidding aside, the music was great. I brought an Ipod and didn't use it.

They did change direction ever hour which was great!

I had a lot of fun last year. Hoping to this year as well, though I've been fighting this chest cold since Monday and hope that it's gone by Saturday! See you all then.

It was great to see everyone, thanks for once again being as friendly as I know Maniacs to be and as Maniacs are commonly recognized as being.

How did everyone find the event? I found a few more flaws than usual.

I loved the social nature of the event, the friendly group of runners and the easy access to everything from setting up personal aid stations to using the showers. The comraderie I recalled and again found is what had me back this year despite some issues in 2012 and 2013.

The 2015 flaws I'm hoping that can be improved for others to enjoy in future years are getting the temperature down, getting the pace screens going (were unreadable for 10 laps then had took me 8-10 more laps to realize the number of completed number and last lap pace were combined in a single column), switching directions more often and applying rules are written (placements and awards were done based on chip time despite the e-mailed reminder on Friday that gun times would govern.)

I'm probably three and done at this one. I enjoyed myself each time but I find the concrete harder on my old fart hips each time and my patience a bit reduced each time with recurring issues. Much like NHL games at football stadiums and college bowl games at baseball venues, atypical running events require special care.

I do recommend a visit to this event to those who love a signature climate-controlled run in the winter. But a trip here is like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates.

Sorry to be a grump but with the price tag next year likely again to be $110, those searching these forums in advance of next year when evaluating race options should get the scoop. While I saw the issues above raised appropriately and in a polite fashion by many runners on race day, there was some level of vocal resistance at that time. At some point later in 2015, I am sure these will be taken more seriously. I hope the boxed chocolates will reveal humdinger fillings in 2016 and in the future.
