Size of your running shoes
Size of your running shoes
I was reading an article recently, and the runner suggested getting a shoe that is 1/2 - 1 bigger than your normal size. Does anybody else subscribe to this? I mean I understand expansion of feet and all that, but running with loose shoes???

Re: Size of your running shoes
"Loose shoes" aren't a good idea but you definitely want some space between your toes and the end of the toe box. A good-fitting model for you can give you this space while still feeling snug everywhere else in the shoe. Of note, this extra toe room is more of an issue with longer runs or on uneven terrain. I can run in sizes 11.5 or 12, but I'll only use the former for track work, short races, and recovery runs.
Re: Size of your running shoes
My regular size shoe is ladies 5.5-6. For running I always use a 7.

Re: Size of your running shoes
I buy my shoes with a finger's width of space beyond my big toe when standing. I don't like my toes touching the end of the shoe when running and it also helps prevent "black toe."
Re: Size of your running shoes
my running shoes are 1/2 size bigger than my regular shoes.
if they're on sale 70% off or something and only my 'regular' size is available, i can make do. but it's not ideal.

Re: Size of your running shoes
I've got a wide wedge shaped foot so I have to try on literally every pair of shoes I buy to see if they'll work. There seems to be no rhyme or reason with respect to what size I'll need in any type of shoe, except that it usually ranges between 9 and 10.5 and regular width to EE, LOL.
Re: Size of your running shoes
I normally wear size 11 in my every day shoes. I tend to wear size 12 for running; both road & trail. I can get away with 11.5 on the road, but will shy away from them when I get up there in the distance.

I have a wedge-shaped foot, too (I call them duck feet). I generally go up 1/2 to one size in runners, compared to street shoes, but more important than length is width of the toe area of the shoe. I need narrow heels and wide toes!

Re: Size of your running shoes
I go up half a size for road shoes. easier on the toes.
For trail shoes, I'm a 40, and that's european, and I have no idea what that is in canadian. but the difference with my trail shoes is that my heels stay put so unless I'm going quite steeply downhill, my toes aren't hitting the front.

me too! i've had really good luck with new balance shoes because they come in widths, so I can do an 8 wide which is perfect for an 8.5 which is passable. I'm usually a 7.5 ish in street shoes.

Re: Size of your running shoes
My runners have always been bigger than my other shoes. Shoe size is 8- 8.5 but I run in 9 - 9.5.

Re: Size of your running shoes
My normal shoes are size 9. My road shoes are 10.5, my trail shoes are 10. So yes, I subscribe to this.

Interesting, don't you find your toes touching to the shoe when going downhill? I know it would likely be a sensory issue for me.

Sorry late to reply.
No actually. My feet don't slide around in the shoe at all (road). On trails I wear the smaller size so that doesn't happen. I used to wear 10 on the road but as distance moved up, I went to the larger size.

Re: Size of your running shoes
I find North American sizing to be totally inconsistent. I range from size 7 to size 8 depending on the brand. European sizing is much more consistent so I just have to pick whichever NA size is closest to 38.5 European.
I don't like black toenails so I make sure the shoes are a bit long.
