Re: Nike Marathon sub 2 hour marathon attempt
I'm not likely to stay up late enough to see the results, but it'll be interesting to see what happens!

Looking at his 1/2 Mary time, it was clear that this wasn't going to happen. $250 US for that funny looking shoes? I think not The Adizero remains the fastest racing flats worn by record holders

Re: Nike Marathon sub 2 hour marathon attempt
I stayed up to watch this last night and I'm glad I did. It was quite amazing to watch.
Eliud Kipchoge made history early this morning, running 42.2K in 2:00:24.
He missed the sub-2:00 by 25 seconds (which is actually quite a lot in a marathon!), but that doesn't take away from the the extraordinary feat that he just accomplished. He has put sub-2:00 within reach, and ran over two-and-a-half minutes faster than the current world record time. Yes, the #breaking2 attempt was set up with perfect conditions- they waited for perfect weather, did it on a perfectly flat auto track, and he was within arms reach of fluids and energy whenever he needed it (which is partly why it the time won't stand as a world record). But his pacing and running were simply awesome. He runs with a beautiful stride and form, wasting no energy. In marathons that he has won recently, he has picked up the pace significantly in the last two miles, meaning he knew he hadn't pushed himself to his absolute limits in those wins. In today's race he slowed at the end-- he was clearly much closer to his actual physical limits.
After the race, he said, "My mind fully was focused on the two hours but in the last seconds I was a bit behind. This journey has been good. It's been hard. It's been a long journey...it's taken seven good months of preparation. I'm happy to have done it. With the race I felt good, I'm a happy man to run a marathon in two hours. Now it is just 25 seconds. I believe in good preparation and planning and if I stick to that the 25 seconds will come."

What's also interesting to me is that the other two competitors (Zersenay Tadese and Lelisa Desisa) did not even stay on pace until the half-way point, and they both have faster half-marathon PBs than that. All that science, the perfect course, well-engineered clothes and shoes. Although those times were from 6-8 years ago, and more recently they have been over 1:00.
Yes, in some ways watching the race was like watching a two-hour-long Nike ad, but it was still very awe-inspiring and historic.

Re: Nike Marathon sub 2 hour marathon attempt
I watched it as well and was in awe of what Kipchoge accomplished. It was hard to look past all the Nike of this event but watching an athlete like that push himself to a two hour marathon(25 sec off the Break2 hype) ? that was freakin' awesome. It was interesting to see the pacers do their job as well. You could see how much they wanted him to get it. Cool.

Yes! Very cool. And they did those switches like a well-oiled machine. All of those pacers are also world-class runners.

Re: Nike Marathon sub 2 hour marathon attempt
A really good summary:
http://sportsscientists.com/2017/05/eli ... oge-20025/
TLDR version:
http://sportsscientists.com/2017/05/eli ... oge-20025/
TLDR version:
What does this mean for the prospects of a legitimate sub-2 hour marathon? I think all the tactics that Nike threw at the runners today are probably worth 90 seconds to two minutes (this is an estimate, however. I think most of it was the Tesla, then the shoes, the rest was trivial if not non-existent), and so I reckon Kipchoge, in a race like Berlin, is probably capable of 2:02:00 to 2:02:20.
I don’t think anyone else in the world is capable of 2:02:00 or faster right now – Kipchoge is a minute faster than the next best.
So that means that one could conceivably see a time under 2:02:30 within Kipchoge’s career, maybe even in 2017 if he goes to Berlin with intent. Then what will be interesting is to see whether anyone responds to Kipchoge’s level, because the current generation does not presently have anyone else to go near 2:02.

I'd take any of them as my pace bunny

I don't think any of them are capable of running slowly enough to be my pace bunny.
