Strider's Hypo-Half RR -or- Can you stand one more?

Postby Strider » Mon Jan 29, 2007 8:49 am

I registered for this race back in December, knowing full well that I would be running it two weeks after the Houston Marathon. This was the 3rd year for this Ottawa Race and the 3rd year I would run it; it is a tradition for me. So I had two weeks to recover, rebuild and taper for the race, which ended up working fairly well. I knew this was not going to be a personal best race, but I did want to test myself a bit. I was figuring an average day would be a 1:45, good day was 1:40, and I’d take what I could get.

Race day dawned perfect, clear blue sky, light wind and not too cold. We did have a light dusting of snow that made the footing a little slippery the entire race but much better than the slush-fest the first year. I like this 4 loop course, in that you can cheer other runners the whole race, making it a fun informal local event. For some reason (I don’t know if others found this) but I found the straight section coming back was a lot harder that heading out. I think there might be a slight upgrade, but I just found every return trip tougher.

Anyhow I ran fairly strong for the first 3 loops and started fading through the last one, but I can’t really complain, considering I had done a hard Marathon 2 weeks before.

Splits were.

5k – 23:15
10k -23:20
15k - 23:30
21k – 29:04

Finish time – 1:39:10

Now as I approached the finish, what did I see? Mrs. Strider and Jr. Strider 2 were waiting for me. It turns out they had just done their own personal triathlon to get there to see me come in, and had arrived about 15 seconds before I got to the finish – perfect timing and what a welcome sight.

I love this race and plan on making it a regular yearly event for many years to come, I hope 

Some where on the course....

SWEET....
I have also started to race "warm-down" races after my big ones....it seems that it is a great way to run a second race as your body is still tuned and ready to rock!

Well done David.
You ran this race in stride  :D
I think what make it tougher coming back is the hairpin turn you have to make with greasy footing and then the incline.
Great pics too.

Now, you can rest and savour your two races.
Regards,
Turtle Luc :)

Holy carp that's a great finish time! I guess I can forgive you for duping so many orders on Zoom. ;)

I can't believe how consistant your splits are! I guess that's the key to doing a race fast.. getting in a groove!

That's a great run when done on fresh legs and in warmer conditions. Even more so 2 weeks after a marathon and in cold, slippery conditions. Congrats on coming back so strongly, so quickly.
