Protein (again)

Postby Size5 » Tue Oct 28, 2008 9:53 pm

Ok I went to a sports dietitian this week. Let me tell you I have one seriously revamped breakfast  Anyhow.... one of the big things is protein that isn't high in fat. There are some suggestions in the literature she gave me but not tons. I'm interested to hear people's suggestions for protein that is portable and no nuts due to an allergy. I don't particularly want to gnaw on a chicken thigh while I drive to work in the morning and the thought of eating eggs more than 3 days a week is really not appealing.

So again, no nuts, portable protein, lower fat content if possible. Your suggestions are welcome!

Oh and this question comes out of eating more dairy than I have in months - in ONE freakin' day!!!!!! (all because I used yogurt as both protein and dairy requirements today)

What about hot quinoa cereal or fruit smoothies with added chia seeds or hemp seeds?

If you google them, or if you google Salba, you'll get all the nutritional information. Salba is an expensive brand of chia... I tend to buy no-name.

Some info is below:

n South America, as far back as 3000 BC until the Spanish Invasion in the 1500's AD, Chia Seeds (Salvia Hispanica) had been a staple of daily nutrition and/or commerce in Pre-Columbian societies. In Mayan and Aztec life, the seed was so important, it was incorporated into religious ceremonies and tribal trading, even having the harvest time for the seeds outlined in ancient Aztec calendars. The health benefits of these super seeds are truly amazing and still being discovered.

Along with maize (corn), beans and amaranth, Chia seeds were one of the four main crops which sustained the ancient societies, helping to make their diets, as discovered by scientists, superior even to modern day. These four crops alone meet the Daily Dietary Requirements as laid out by the World Health Organization (WHO).

One could obtain a healthy and more sustaining life by consuming Chia Seeds. They were known in ancient society as the "Running Food" and is said ancient warriors would sustain themselves on long journeys with a single spoon full of the seeds daily.

Can you count a latte as protein?

One serving of Rogers Porridge Oats is 6g of protein. I eat this most days per week. There is a recipe for breakfast cookies on the bag.

How much protein does she want you to eat a day?

I hate eggs as well so I struggle with protein in the morning. I usually like going for kashi go lean crunch. I don't drink milk either (I know its bad) so I eat the kashi with vanilla fat-free yogourt (right now I'm on an Activia kick, not because of all the probiotic hype but because it has THE best tasting vanilla yogour)t. I think in one serving of the kashi alone you get 12g of protein. With the yogourt its even more.

Can you handle cottage cheese? Comes in low fat/skim variety. I throw fruit into mine but some prefer it salted or plain.

100g of Cottage Cheese contains 14g or protein 4g of fat (1g if 1%) and 100 calories.

No suggestions here since I struggle with this as well (as I sit here eating a bagel...with no protein). I'm in a breakfast rut, and will be watching your suggestions!

Chocolate! Seriously, i have been having a hot cocoa with my breakfast ever since my stomach has decided i can't eat anything of substance in the morning. Calorie-wise, hot cocoa is not that bad, and then you control the sugar addition (i add less than a tsp since i like it a bit bitter) and the hot chocolate contributes protein and also dairy!

I get most of my protein from peanut butter and milk, lol.

But someone mentioned tuna above--you can do so many different things with it and it's mostly protein!

when we're on the cave man im diet, our breakfasts usually are:

- hard boiled eggs on squirelly bread
- yoghurt - with a low sugar content
- squirelly bread and peanut butter (which I realize now won't work due to nut allergy)
- porridge on occasion
- we've also been know to eat a hambuger patty or piece of chicken on occasion too.

What part of the squirrel do you bake into the bread?

Rogers porridge oats - are these slow cooked oats??? I have to look at this.

2 proteins so around 15-20 g of protein for breakfast.

Good for you! It is also tricky since I pack my lunch and take it to work with my two mornings a week to eat after swimming - I usually end up with fruit or a bagel (again!).

I will try!
