Re: Caffeine loading vs Carb loading
I have my morning coffee before a race, even two, but wouldn't choose to fire down "wake ups" or caffeine gum. So, for you, even if the amount of caffeine is the same you consider the delivery mechanism is a differentiating factor? Seriously? Your arrogance is truly breath-taking sometimes.

Re: Caffeine loading vs Carb loading
I wouldn't call it caffeine loading but I do take a shot of caffeine before a race in pill form; I think it definitely helps. Incidentally, that's the only time my body sees caffeine, I've cut it out of my regular diet completely (no coffee, tea, soda, etc....) for the last five years or so.

Re: Post work weight loss doesn't equal fluid loss...?
I'm puzzled. On one hand you are very sure about your position on hydration, on the other hand you say "with my misguided "over-hydration" strategy I still seem to always exhibit symptoms of mild to moderate dehydration at the end of events longer than a couple of hours. Weird, huh ?...

Yes, very interesting.
I'm not in any way educated in the subject so this is an off-the-top-of-my-head question; does this have any bearing on how, why or whether ART works?

Re: Post work weight loss doesn't equal fluid loss...?
Pat, on the off chance you're not asking rhetorically; why yes, I do believe that after 35 years of athletic competition of one sort or another, including at the professional level, I do know the difference between fatigue and dehydration.

Re: Post work weight loss doesn't equal fluid loss...?
I ask you guys whether you've ever run a marathon and felt "sloshy", or found your fingers swollen, or had difficulty taking in fluids. No; and yet with my misguided "over-hydration" strategy I still seem to always exhibit symptoms of mild to moderate dehydration at the end of e...

Re: Tracking IMWA (Carla & Dave)
Just a question about Dave's time. I am an absolute neophyte when it comes to ironman - but I'm wondering how close his time gets him to qualifying for Kona? Dave was 41/194 in his AG. To have a reasonable chance of a Kona [rolldown] slot, he would have to finish in the top 10, top 15 at the absolu...

Re: Is the Marathon too popular?
Disrespected by runners; no, in fact sometimes the opposite. I care more what my running peers think. Disrespected by runners: it varies. Thats why I mentioned the runners at the Y because there is still a large contingent of runners who think the marathon is the be-all and end-all and that other d...

Re: Post work weight loss doesn't equal fluid loss...?
And I'll beat my drum too. If you're a heavy sweater and you are exercising for more than a couple of hours, failing to drink ahead of the curve WILL lead to dehydration and it WILL take you down far before ANY risk of hyponatemia, 100% of the time. Your body may well actually regulate electrolytes ...

Re: Is the Marathon too popular?
Interesting discussion. Let me rephrase the question to clarify what I'm thinking: Are distances other than the marathon disrespected? My answer - YES. I think you need to qualify the question further to specify "disrespected by whom?" Disrespected by non runners; yes, but I could care le...

Re: maxHR on bike
As a general rule, all of your HR zones will be about 10bpm lower on the bike than running, including your max. FWIW, my max measured HR running is 174bpm and my max measured HR riding is 164bpm (this while being chased by a fast dog at the end of a long ride - that sumbitch stayed with me all the w...

Why not replace a few of the men with women? Or why world record holders, why not just famous runners? Yes, it should totally be famous triathletes; men and women, they're both equally awesome. ;) Well, maybe one or two. What was the name of the woman who won Hawaii in such grand style about 15 yea...

Re: Is the Marathon too popular?
Does anyone else see the irony in how the discussion has moved to better value and cheaper price for the marathon versus shorter races, in the context of the OP? Just because the race is shorter doesn't make it worth less... You pay for race day magic and all the services that go with race day...

Re: A good speed bike training book
Cycling for road/team races and cycling for triathlon are two different sports. Some of the training protocols are the same, but there are a lot of differences, too.
