Re: Should double-amputee be allowed to run in the Olympics

Unfair advatnage arguement? Whose to say that the "normal" guys on the start line are not on the "juice"? WADA. Or better but, haven't been caught yet? Look at all the stuff that has spilled out waaaayyyy past some athletes olympic glory & after making a whole bunch of $$$ from advertising, etc...

Mile repeats at 5k pace are very stressful, probably more stressful than they're worth, especially for someone in the 25-minute range as opposed to 14-15 minutes. You can get an excellent sense of pacing doing 800s. It's not about the length of the interval so much as how many workouts you do. A set...

Plyometrics are a great way of wasting time that could be better spent running.

The specific prosthetics he uses do give him an unfair advantage. You can make prosthetics that don't give you an unfair advantage. Just because you're disabled doesn't mean you can do whatever you want. He also hasn't made the Olympic standard, which is another, more important ban on his participat...

The Mississauga Greyhound station isn't that far from Square One, which is where I guess the host hotel would be. It's about 5k.

Andy, from one Greyhound enthusiast to another, you can do this if you want, but it's going to involve a lot of time on buses and, worse, a lot of time in Mississauga.

It's a point to point race, the finish is about 20 minutes from the start. Whichever the host hotel is close to, it's also really far from.

Do Ottawa. I don't know why you'd come all the way from Ottawa to run Mississauga.

No, reading comprehension was never how you say in English thing I am good at. I guess his co-worker isn't a weenie.

The FIRST 5k program is a good one as well, but it's more complexity than is really needed.

Agreed. Your co-worker is kind of a weenie for challenging someone a few minutes slower to a race. The program that dgrant linked to is great. I'd do a 20-minute continuous run instead of the 10-minute repeats for one of the weeks. Races are continuous and monotonous, so you should practice doing so...

Right, but I was much slower when I ran the 3:10. I could've cruised to a 3:02-3:05, but I wanted the 2:59. My first half was 1:31, but something tells me you already know that.

A guy in sub-1:20 shape has to work pretty hard to not break 3 hours. I was in 1:23-1:24 shape at best last May.

No way. I could've run 3:03 on that course if I hadn't gotten greedy. Pat should be between 2:50-2:55 depending on how many miles he can run before then.

Do the opposite, put your goal 5 km time to get your training target and pace. That's a really bad idea. The goal is to do workouts, build fitness and hit a certain time, say, 16:59. The goal is not to be able to do the workouts commensurate with that goal time. If I'm at 17:44 and I want to break ...

I ran this meet a couple of years ago. Maybe it was being around some of Canada's best runners from the '60s and '70s (now in their 60s and 70s), but my back tightened up ferociously. The spikes didn't help. I didn't even break 12 minutes for 2 miles, though I did nip Ed Whitlock. Pat, what're you r...

It wasn't that hot in 1982. The high that day was about 20 degrees, according to this 2:12 marathoner who was there. Keep in mind that 2:08 was the world record back then.

As for Fukushi, she might well have had a clause with her sponsor to finish. Finishing is terribly overrated.

By this I mean I believe you could run hard every day IF you got 10hrs of sleep and rest before next hard run. You can't. I slept 10 hours a night the last couple of weeks of December, and I was running about 70 miles a week. I could still only run hard twice a week. Even the pros might be able to ...

IMO, speed is not the mark of a good instructor. It is, to a point. Teaching a Running Room clinic isn't really high-level coaching, you're really just helping people follow a program, so your single most important task is to make people come and do the runs. I've seen more than a hundred instructo...
