walking board?

Postby ultraslacker » Sun Apr 16, 2006 8:34 pm

Tossing around the idea of making a section for walkers... I know we have a few that have expressed interest. Is there enough demand?

Hey Holly, you have to do the maintenance so if you think that it would be welcome to some then sure why not??

There is always room for a walk or a walker.
Please consider the jobs of those in the forest industry before deciding not to print stuff

I think my friend would be interested in a walking thread.

Well, I walk more than I run - usually for transportation than anything else, but lately have been thinking of adding more for crosstraining... Couldn't hurt to add a section.

Holly, I will step up now and volunteer to mod the section.

I have been trying to get my sister to join RM for a while...she is a walker, actually both of them are...and they've lurked but not registered yet. Maybe this will be enough to get them to join in the fun.

I was a walker for years before I started running last year.

I think it would just be set up as a walking section, like the NRR, or general, etc.

yep.

Since I don't know what the demand will be, I will mod it myself for awhile, and see how it goes, and if there is enough demand to keep it then we'll go from there. :)

Yes, I think we should have the Queen in charge, as I have heard those walkers can be a pretty rowdy bunch!

As one of the rowdy walkers, I'll weigh in here... Not literally, the scale is too scary.

Since I started walking during this whole pregnancy thing, I've learned just how seriously walkers take their training. They do hill repeats, speed work and LSD walks just like runners. I'm sure they would love to have a place to talk about all these things.

As for me, I'm just dying to get back to running ASAP, so I will continue to pretend I'm a runner, even if I have to walk for the next couple months.

After watching the walkers at the Run for the Toad, I gained a whole lot of respect for them. These are not just people who are out for a stroll at the mall! They were pounding off the kms very quickly!! They buried me in their dust on the hills when I was forced to walk!! I need to learn to walk properly so that I don't lose all that time on the hills! I tell you, walking sure is a lot harder than running for me!

well, I will go ahead and add a walking section (probably tonight). And then we'll see how it goes. If it is busy enough, we'll keep it. But if it's dead, we'll ditch it. :)

Hi There! RobbieT's wife here. As you have probably already heard I have just had baby #2 7 weeks ago and have been slowly getting on the treadmill for both weight loss and for a sanity break from all of my boys (especially RobbieT) I would be interested in this forum if it flies. Not sure about how serious I could get into my running with an infant and a toddler but I was thinking it would be cool to train for a half marathon some day  I will watch to see how this goes!

Welcome, Bridie T. Congratulations on your latest family addition. Enjoy the walking and, when you're ready, we want to see you kick Robbie's butt in a race.

Oh, if this walking forum does take off and you become regular, ya gotta lose that avatar. I'm sure you're much better looking that that. :D

Welcome Birdie! I hope the post-baby exercise routine is going well. You're lucky to have a treadmill at home-- for me it was lots of walking with the stroller (my kids are now 6 and 9-- too big to push.)

But you do need your own login. :)

I agree with Jwolf. I did a lot of walking with both single and double strollers in every weather and sidewalkconditions you can imagine in Ottawa. I think it prepared me very well for running. Running seems so easy when you don't have to push or carry anything, except a water bottle.
I run because it's fun.

Thanks for the Welcome! Yes I will get my own avatar soon, I should hope that I am a little prettier than RobbieT but he is definitely faster and always will be I suspect. Yes I am lucky to have this treadmill, it allows me to walk during the day when the babies are sleeping and late at night when RobbieT is here to cover for me. We live out in the country so using the double stroller is a bit of an ordeal. We do load everything up in the car sometimes and go into town. Will get on that Avatar thing ASAP

One word of caution, those walkers take things A LOT more seriously than us runners do. You know the stink caused when some bigshot says that if you run/walk in a marathon, you didn't "run" a marathon? That's nothing compared to the pure anguish caused when questioning walkers who may be inconsiderate during races. i.e. Walking in the middle of the road, 5 abreast, starting in the front with the elite runners, etc...

And whatever you do don't question their right to having a separate awards ceremony and recognition for walkers in races, as well as their right to personal showers, personal escorts, and custom made meals as well. I learned my lesson at the RR forum.. Just say Yes, and Thank You Mam.

P.s. After making the new section please delete all of these comments. I may need witness protection services for my family as well.

Oh and welcome to Birdie too. You seem like a nice friendly walker, so I'm not scared of making these comments in front of you (yet).
