Introduction

Postby DLS » Sat Feb 13, 2010 9:26 am

Hi there. I've been lurking here for a bit, enjoying reading your posts, and I wanted to say hello for the first time. I live half the time in Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON, and the other half in Calgary AB.

I've always been relatively "active", and I wanted to run, but whenever I tried to run, I'd burn out really quickly, which was frustrating. I have notes from 1992, 1995, and 1998, all documenting attempts to start running.

Finally, a few months ago, I went for a fitness assessment, and was told that I had great cardio fitness. I told the guy that I'd love to believe him, but since I couldn't seem to run, I thought he must be sniffing glue. He looked at me sideways, and told me to strap on a heart rate monitor, keep it between 135 and 165 bpm, and follow a learn to run programme. The first time I got on a treadmill and was able to complete 20 mins of run/walking, I was astonished. I'd been going too fast -- who would have thought?

Since then, I've been running 5 times per week, moving from 1:1 running and walking, to 20:1 running/walking. Yeah, I'm still slow (5mph) in order to not spike the heart rate, but since I last a lot longer, I'm able to run about 30kms per week -- amazing!

I'll be moving to running outside soon, which should prove to be amusing, but in the spirit of having a goal, I've <gulp> signed up for a 10k in Ottawa at the end of April to celebrate my 40th birthday. From there, I'm going to train to do a half marathon in Cochrane AB at the beginning of June.

There -- now I've said it out loud, so it's a commitment!

Nice to meet you all.

Welcome to RM!!

Very cool that you're running the Nordion 10km at NCM...make sure to go and put your name on the Maniac list. There's likely (as in 99.99999% sure)to be a large Meet N Greet after the race...hopefully you can come to that :D

Whoops...edited to add...I see it's the end of April you're going to Ottawa...are you running the Run For Reach 10km? I've done that a couple times...nice race...low key and well organized.

Yes, it's the Run for Reach. Should be fun -- then out to dinner afterwards!

Thanks!

Yes, I used to live in Ottawa, so I have friends and family living there -- I try to make it back a couple times a year, even if only to have the croissants from the Boulangerie Français in the Market!

Nordion 10k might be a push, but I'll keep it in mind.
