Prairiekid's Racing Anniversary
I know I've been absent from RM for a while now - it just seems like other things have been occupying my online time. Today I wanted to check in though, and report about my run at the CN Tracks of Glory this morning.
Back in September of 2003 the CN Tracks of Glory 10k was the first race I ever ran, and I haven't been back to it until today. I suppose you could say that this was my 5th Race-iversary. Back in 2003 my goal was to finish in under an hour, and I finished in 56:04, which I was very pleased with. Going in to the race today my PB for 10k was 46:44, and I hoped to get that down under 46 minutes.
I've had a pretty good summer of running, despite my lackluster run at the Calgary HBC race (I'm telling you, it was the altitude!). I've been doing well in Dwayne's trail races (http://trailrunmanitoba.com/), and I've been trying to keep my speed up in training, because I knew I wanted to try again for a new 10k PB at this September race. In fact a while back I realized that if I was serious about a new PB I better do some workouts incorporating my 10k race pace. I tried a 10 minute warm-up followed by five 2-minute intervals at 4:30/km... and I remembered why I'm not a fan of these shorter distance races. Yikes. 10k race pace is not at all comfortable! At least not for me. However, I had some good track workouts, and I figured I'd be able to manage a new PB unless something went terribly wrong.
The race itself was not fun. The pace felt ok for the first few km, but it started to wear on me quickly. Also, the sun came out about 2 minutes after the start and things heated up quickly. Bleah. I wrote the split times for 45:00 on the back of my hand and passed the half-way mark a few seconds slower than that. As Mouse mentioned, this was a two loop course, and that second loop was no fun at all. I had the beginnings of a stitch a lot of the way, but I managed to breath through it, and despite feeling like crap my splits remained relatively consistent.
So I ended up finishing in 45:09, PB of 1:35, which I'm very happy about. It was a really strong field - some of the perennial winners ended up not even placing in the more competitive age groups. Apparently I actually came third in my age group - the less fierce 35-39ers (thanks for collecting my swag, KBO!).
So it was a good race, but I'm really glad it's over. Of course when I got home I plugged my new PB into MacMillan's calculator, which has always worked quite well for me. I says a 10k of 45:09 is equivalent to a 5k of 21:44, an half marathon of 1:40:28, and a full marathon of 3:31:53. Now I've got a whole new set of goals!
It was nice to have friends out there today - as usual you're never alone if you're running a race in Winnipeg. And it's nice to check back in here too. I'm completely out of the loop, but at least I remember where the loop is, and I've found my way back to it for a little while.

Nice PB, Pam. Did someone say races were supposed to feel easy? Shorter races are just a different kind of pain from marathons. At least the pain goes aways faster! The main thing is you hung tough and delivered, with some AG schwag to boot. Not a bad result from a day at the races....

Pam, thanks for the report. It is great to read one of your speedy results again and you've been missed!
Congrats on an awesome race, and placement!! I think that mojo is going to put you back to Boston before you know it!
(and if a Boston return isn't on your radar, pretty much anything else can be)

I run because it's my passion, and not just a sport. Every time I walk out the door, I know why I'm going where I'm going and I'm already focused on that special place where I find my peace and solitude. Running, to me, is more than just a physical exercise...it's a consistent reward for victory!

For a not-fun, miserable race, you must be pretty darn happy with the results.
Nice job & good luck with those new goals!

Why practice running slow? It comes naturally!

Way to go Pam!
You and Fiona have been dueling all summer long, she looked so focussed on catching you yesterday, but you managed to hold her off.
You'll have to settle the grudge match on the 18th of October

Once again, it was great fun watching other people run...especially you...You always look so strong and confident in races...I'm so glad that this one paid off for you...
(I can totally relate about not liking the two loops in this race...I didn't run it for various reasons this year - but the second loop always kills me...I HATE that second loop!!!!)

22 halfs (PR 1:42:02)
5 full (PR 3:48:21)
...and a smattering of adventure and trail races thrown in for good measure!

All running is on hold until further notice .... :0(

Faster and faster
Congratulations on the AG placing and a new PB. I'm so sorry I couldn't be there to see the finish! Great report, thanks.
