Glucosamine and Chondroiton

Postby Spirit Unleashed » Sat Jul 06, 2013 8:01 am

2 years ago, I had a doctor recommend these and I have been taking them. But on the radio yesterday, I heard they are useless. Anyone have good data on their usefulness?

What about MSM? I use it in cream and seems to help.

I've been taking it since I started running in 2008...have no idea if it does anything, but doesn't seem to hurt so I take it. I take 2 in the morning (from Costco, Kirkland brand, which are 500/400).

All that stuff is useless at best, and harmful at worst. The supplement industry IS NOT REGULATED. I don't normally post/yell, but I think most people overlook that fact. Just ask Tyson Gay and Astafa Powell... Assuming they are innocent, you have no f'ing clue what they're putting in the pills. Nobody says you have to label everything you put in. Why not have secret ingredients? Ever hear of Coke?

No seriously. Supplements are terrible! Avoid like the plague - burn the store down. Avoid walking near them.

Maybe the only thing that has actual value is Vit D, which you only need in the Winter 1,000mg.

Edit - just read/skimmed La's link. Its' okay. It agrees with me.

Tough one, and to each their own, do your own research and make your own decisions...I take 1 Glucosamine (Kirkland brand) each meal. Started when I was having knee pain. I'm not sure if it helped or not, but it got better. I too started a search for details and studies as I take nothing, supplements etc...for eg I haven't taken a Tylenol since before 2005, I know this because when I went to take the bottle away on a holiday last year it had expired 7yrs earlier :)

I tend to trust anything punished by the Mayo Clinic, they have a pretty good reputation and they say it has benefit. Is it helping me? no idea...but I'm leaning to yes.

Another good article from the Harvard Medical School has a very balanced view.

I have less arthritis pain when I am taking it. (Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM in liquid form)
However, I can't afford to take it all the time, so will go for 3-4 months on, 3-4 months off.

Better than the NSAIDs from the doctor which gave me stomach ulcers.

I quit taking it. I don't have arthritis, and that is the only joint issue it (might) help. It does nothing for tendonitis, which is my recurring problem.
